A teetered battle tonight showcases King's team with a tightened shooting touch as Sainto and others pace the action. The Deacons strive to clutch a critical win amid a rugged contest and public attention.
Masonite, short-handed, pushed defending champions W A Realty to the limit in Ukiah Valley league play at Pomolita Gym. Realty pulled away late for a 62 to 49 win as Masonite hustled with Mayo, Huey Mayo, Potter, Watts and Poteet fighting hard for every rebound. Realty's Watts led with 22, King added 17, while Masonite’s Roy Pagett and Jerry Cook stood out amid fatigue and turnover pressure.
Light weight champion Joe Brown challenges Ernie Sonny Boy Williams in a non-title 10 round TV bout at New Capitol Arena tonight. Williams, 22, from Washington, brings polish and speed shown in his TV debut on October 4 when he faced Dave.
Ukiah High School Faculty and Lions Club meet at Chessall gym for a March of Dimes Polio fundraiser with a 7 p.m. preliminary between Church of Latter Day Saints and Lions. Tickets 50 cents adults 25 cents students. proceeds aid local campaign. Notable players include Bob Marsh George Kin Jerry Cook Terry McKeon and coach Bill Tully. Bob Cousy, famed Celtics star and joker, is highlighted in a separate note about his career and humor.
Jimmie Foxx, famed slugger and versatile star of a 20 year career, was named coach of the Boston Red Sox AAA Minneapolis Millers. He hinted at co authoring a book about his career, a TV film, and a speaking tour as he recovers financially after a brief period of unemployment and reports of 270000 dollars earned as a player.
Walden secured a decisive victory with a topside knockdown and stoppage in the ninth round at the arena. The bout is set for national NBC broadcast at 7 p.m. Pacific time tonight.
Sally Quinn, 25, a 98 pound inmate at the Women s House of Detention, escaped from her fourth floor cell Thursday by tying eight bedsheets into a rope and squeezing through a window 18 inches high by 554 wide. Her 250 pound cellmate refused to take part in the escape.
