Mendocino Declares Disaster Area After Severe Storms

Mendocino County declared a state of emergency as heavy rains and flooding cause over 3 million in damage to roads and utilities with private property losses adding to an expected total exceeding 5 million. PG and local crews worked to restore gas and power while highways face closures and by passes.

Mendocino County Taxable Sales Fall In Q3 1973

The State Board of Equalization reports Mendocino County third quarter taxable sales declined by 506000 from 1972 to 41745000. Ukiah rose slightly to 12399000 while Fort Bragg and Willits posted gains. general merchandise, building materials, farm equipment, auto dealers, and service stations saw county losses in several sectors. Statewide, third quarter growth slowed to 3.7 percent after price adjustments, with nondurables leading durables and service stations and restaurants among notable gains.

Ukiah students seek relief from late school start times

A delegation of Ukiah High School students, led by Mike Valentini, will meet Ukiah Unified School District officials at the district office to press for an earlier start time, arguing the 8:30 a.m. bell harms student jobs and work permits. The board planned to keep the 8:30 a.m. time until March 1, with protests already visible from underclassmen.

Willits site debated for Mendocino College campus location

Lake County administrators warn that choosing Willits over Ukiah for the Mendocino Community College District campus could bring far reaching negative consequences for junior college education in Lake and Mendocino counties. The Mendocino board meets Wednesday to hear geological and soil test updates and decide campus placement among Willits Redwood Valley and Ukiah options.

Covelo gas crisis described as critical by judge

Round Valley residents face severe gasoline shortages as Covelo's three stations operate at reduced capacity. Judge Joseph Weber petitions the Interior Department citing inequitable allocations and a 56 to 19 percent drop in December and January respectively. With 1800 square miles dependent on Covelo, locals haul gas from Laytonville while 40,000 gallons sit held by a Standard Oil distributor.
