A plan to route heavy hauling east of Ukiah aims to give the town relief. The issue highlights a Polio fundraiser, a Crockett life feature, and local notes on events at the high school gym.
Food and diesel parts for the William McCulloughs living on the Travis ranch near Trinity and Mendocino counties were flown in yesterday from Ukiah. The family, including two adults and a 10 month old, had been cut off since before Christmas with only telephones for contact. The Red Cross organized the relief after a friend in Ukiah alerted help as milk and gasoline dwindled.
The Sonoma Mendocino Council of Boy Scouts of America met January 17 at the Palace Hotel Ukiah with 260 in attendance. New district scout executive Al Schoenfeld was introduced to lead Santa Rosa and Geyser Peak districts.
Ford Motor Co. stock jumped above 70 a share in frenetic over the counter trading as brokers report demand near record levels. The offering priced at 64.50 with 10.2 million shares. many new buyers and investors sought to profit after missing the initial allotment.
Three passenger laden airliners narrowly avoided calamity Tuesday in separate incidents. A Boston to New York Northeast Airlines flight landed safely at LaGuardia after a total electrical failure left instruments useless. Two Parsons were killed in a DC3 crash in Canada, while a pilot in Wisconsin managed a belly landing saving twelve aboard. A collision of two jet trainers near Troy, Ohio left one pilot dead and the other safe. The NY city crew credited divine aid for the narrow escapes.
The state Public Utilities Commission ruled that firms providing television antenna service to set owners are subject to PUC jurisdiction as telephone corporations. The decision, based on a state supreme court ruling, may not affect the ongoing contract between Spanish Mountain Television and Ukiah City, which runs 12 years more and includes city operational control.
Hill Carlson of the Small Business Administration visits Santa Rosa to take flood damage loan applications. He will be at the civil defense office in the courthouse all day. Applicants with claims urged to file now as this may be his only visit. Loans offered at three percent to approved applicants.
Mendocino County Hospital announced it has become a member of the California Hospital Association effective January 1. Jay Boger said Avery Millard disclosed the news. CHA affiliation with the National Hospital Association signals the county meets standards with a new hospital, expanded nursing, x ray, laboratory and medical staff.
Vice President Nixon said the United States and allies can meet and defeat any aggressor. A Southern Pacific train collided with a truck near Phoenix, killing three farm workers. Admiral Burke testified Russia ranks second to the US in naval power. In Bombay, police battled Communist labor mobs, raising casualties to at least seven dead and twenty wounded.
Earl K. Long swept a five way gubernatorial primary winning all but two of Louisiana’s 64 parishes and becoming the first primary victor in 20 years without a runoff. He said the people wanted Old Earl despite newspaper opposition and pledged to prove a governor the press would approve.
REE COFFEE offers free coffee today and tomorrow at Pat and Ken's Café in Calpella while supporting the March of Dimes polio drive. Conrad Cox, chairman, urges patrons to donate to the campaign as they enjoy a cup of hot coffee.
The Ukiah Union High School district plans an $800000 bond vote on March 2 to fund an 18 room classroom building and a new cafeteria. The project expands the plant to meet rising enrollment and reconfigures space with a breezeway connection to the main building.
United Nations Security Council censured Israel for its attack on a Syrian outpost but aimed to avoid economic sanctions. Syria demanded the U S cut all economic aid, a point referred to Washington for decision. U S Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge said no immediate reply would be given.
Mendocino County Employees Association will meet January 28 at 7 p.m. in the Redwood Valley Grange hall for its annual dinner meeting with standing committee reports. Retired members receive life membership and guests may attend events. Ukiah volunteers should bring hot dishes and others salads and desserts. Dancing to music by Elmer Purdy and calls by Purdy will close the evening. Lee Trowbridge invites volunteers from the civil defense office.
Billy's Beach Boys, newly returned from Waikiki, will headline the annual chamber of commerce dinner dance on Saturday February 4 at Car Purdy Hall. The event features authentic Hawaiian Tahitian dances and native songs with a Polynesian Night theme. Tickets are by reservation only through the chamber office at WO 24705.
