Ukiah Unified school trustees deadlocked 4-3 to reject a nine cent per one hundred assessed value override for 1971-72, leaving the district about $54,000 short as county tax on household furnishings was removed. Superintendent Murphy expressed surprise as board members Bruce Bearden Lewis Martinelli Bill Proctor and Nancy March opposed the routine override, a reversal of recent years.

Salty the mongrel makes 272 mile trek home
Salty, a 21 month old mongrel, walked or rode through woods fields lakes streams and towns to reach her original mistress Margie Labeff in Detroit. After being given away in August and then moved to Cheboygan the dog vanished on December 18 and reappeared New Year’s Day outside the Labeff home. Salty is home for good.

Two-car collision injures three on Highway 101 near Russian River
At 11 pm Tuesday, Clifford Franco 31 of San Jose and John Roberts Ukiah drove north and south respectively when icy pavement caused Franco to lose control. Franco Helen Roberts 48 and Diana Roberts 28 were injured and transported to hospital by Ukiah Ambulance.

Patient Struck by Auto on River Road Near Talmage
Edith Morris, 40, a patient at MSH, escaped with a skinned knee after a car struck her on River Road south of Talmage Tuesday morning. The driver was Susan Jones, 21, who was turning from Talmage Road onto River Road when the accident occurred.

Dos Rios Bridge Repair Plan Approved by Board

Drunk Driving Arrest After Ukiah Two Car Crash
Donald Culton, 50, of Ukiah, was arrested Tuesday morning after a two car non-injury crash at State and Mill streets. He faces drunk driving charges after an investigation by Officers Richard Boyman and Frank Stafford. Culton was booked at the city jail around 8:58 a.m. A separate report to the sheriff’s office said a whiteface calf was stolen from Bunkerhill Ranch near Dos Rios between January 9 and 11, prompting a livestock theft inquiry led by Deputy Ross Duke.

Woman Hurt As Car Skids On Ice At Ukiah Overpass
Joan Neilson 38, of Ukiah, slight injuries after her car skids on ice at Talmage Road overpass and hits a bridge abutment at 7 47 am. The vehicle was struck by an eastbound car driven by Paul Revels 61, also of Ukiah.

Early Morning Fire Damages Redwood Valley Home
A Redwood Valley home occupied by Mr and Mrs Tim Swinney suffered heavy damage when a kitchen fire broke out in the early morning. Firefighters from the Redwood Valley Calpella department arrived at 4 40 and the blaze was under control by 6 20. Estimated losses were 3000 for the structure and 1500 for contents. The Swinneys and their infant child escaped unharmed. The house is owned by James Hendrix.
