Simon created a task force from the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Energy Office to audit price, profit and supply records of every U.S. petroleum refinery. The move aims to verify refinery reports, justify price increases and pursue an independent reporting system on inventories, with teams visiting corporate offices and firms up to four times yearly. The plan covers all 140 refineries and follows criticism over data accuracy amid the energy crisis.
