Reagan's State of the State Plea for Energy Cuts

Reagan urged Californians to cut personal energy use by 10 percent and pressed for nonpartisan election oversight, proposing a constitutional amendment to make the secretary of state’s office nonpartisan. Campus cost estimates close on three site options

Lee Persico Elected Fair Board President

Lee Persico was elected president of the fair board with Russell Clarke named vice president to succeed him. Clarke has served since 1967 and Persico joined the board after being appointed by Rev. Reagan in 1971. The board selected Melody of Memories as the 1974 Redwood Empire Fair theme with cash prizes for top slogans and a roofing bid approved for fairgrounds buildings.

Ukiah Unified Board Restores School Times After Dark

Ukiah Unified board voted to override daylight savings and shift all school and bus times one hour later starting Thursday. Attendance will begin around 8:30 to 9 a.m., with buses running accordingly and end times extended to about 5:30 p.m. Parents voiced safety concerns over darkness during commutes.

Mutual firefighting services discussed in Ukiah meeting

Ukiah City and Ukiah Valley Fire Protection District directors debated a proposed 10 year contract to consolidate the two agencies. The agreement calls for further study with a Feb 12 board discussion. Present councilman Sterling Norgard answered questions as the panel weighs longer term cooperation under the existing one year contract.

Mendocino County Considers Smoking Ban in Public Places

Public health officer Dr. Robert Holtzer urges the board of supervisors to pass an ordinance banning smoking in public meeting places elevators indoor theaters libraries museums concert halls restaurants and public hospitals with designated smoking areas allowed. Violations carry a 10 dollar fine and 30 dollars for public or private officials, while restrooms and private gatherings remain exempt.

Avila appoints Pyorre to Mendocino County planning board

Augie Avila named Richard Pyorre of Fort Bragg as the interim member of the Mendocino County planning commission to fill Ed Stoddard’s unexpired term. Pyorre, a Fort Bragg native and Navy veteran, previously worked as a county planner and now serves as State Farm Insurance agent in Fort Bragg with wife Cindy and son Rick.
