Mendocino College students favor nearby sites for campus

Seven Truck Crash Sets Freeway Ablaze in Los Angeles

A 3:30 am crash on the outbound Golden State Freeway near Griffith involved seven trucks including four gasoline tankers. One driver died trapped in his overturned cab as flames spanned lanes, flooding storm drains and a pumping station, with two hours needed to contain the fire and traffic chaos.

Outstanding Citizen of ’737 to be honored at Ukiah dinner

The Greater Ukiah Chamber of Commerce will name the Outstanding Citizen of 1973 at its installation dinner on Saturday January 12 at the Lake Mendocino clubhouse. Master of ceremonies will be Jack T Pearson, past chamber president. New officers include Iver Suess president Luther McRee first vice president William Hulton second vice president and Clarence White Jr treasurer. New directors are Jack Cox Dave Spencer Bill Fernandez and Lowell Ambrosini. Reservations at 462-4705.

Airlines warn fuel rise risks travel costs and jobs

The Air Transport Association warned that soaring jet fuel prices could push airline ticket costs out of reach for millions and trigger cuts of 1,500 flights and 15,000 pilot furloughs as the energy crisis worsens. ATA urged to meet with energy officials to discuss containment.

Weekend storm claims third Lake victim

Lake County coroner reports the third death from the weekend storm, an elderly woman found on her Loch Lomond steps amid 1 to 2 feet of snow. Artie L. Alexander, 73, was near her home when she slipped and died after last contact Sunday. Two others, Kim Ray Williams, 72, and Verla F. Williams, 57, were found dead 300 feet from their trailer in snow near Clearlake Highlands. Deputies say they struggled to return to their trailer after a cafe visit and froze. Roads remain open but chains are required on Lakeport Road and Highway 175 near the summit due to icing.

Judge Weber replies to sheriff after Christmas gun battle

Joseph A.
