Boonville Rec Site Plan A $30,000 Center Proposed

Planning for a Boonville recreation site advances with a proposed $30,000 community center for Anderson Valley. Floyd Lawrence will inspect the abandoned elementary school behind the fairgrounds as the American Legion pushes the project. The group cites $4,200 to buy the property and $5,000 for initial remodeling, with $9,200 of this year’s $15,600 veterans memorial budget requested now. Further steps depend on Lawrence’s recommendation to the county board.

Richardson Killed In Hiway Crash near Healdsburg

Stanley Richardson 59 of Santa Rosa died Wednesday on Redwood highway near Healdsburg when his car skidded on wet pavement and hit a northbound truck. Carl Cannon of Eureka drove the truck. funeral services set for Saturday at Santa Rosa Memorial Chapel with Willits F AM. Interment in Santa Rosa Memorial Park.

Joseph R. Figene Dies Suddenly at 65 in Ukiah Valley

Joseph R. Figene 65 a longtime Ukiah Valley resident died suddenly this morning at his ranch east of Talmage. He was active in local affairs a World War II veteran and helped organize the Lewis White Post American Legion he served on the Ukiah Bank of America advisory board and Juvenile Hall board. The body lay at Zimmerman Mortuary awaiting arrangements.

Supervisors Adopt Policy Clarifying Fish and Game Advisory

The board approves a resolution outlining the Fish and Game Advisory Committee’s powers and duties. The five member panel expires after one year, meets twice yearly, and may be paid expenses from the Propagation Fund with supervisor approval for extra costs. Chairman is Nolan Hunt of Ukiah. Also, a letter to Congressman Clem Miller seeks a bill to name the water behind Coyote Dam Lake Mendocino.

Mikoyan Flees Picket Line on Detroit Arrival

Soviet Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan arrived in Detroit bypassing about 50 anti Soviet pickets at Willow Run Airport. He and a party of Soviet officials proceeded to a hangar then moved by car to the expressway toward the city, while refugees from Ukraine Lithuania Romania Latvia and Hungary protested with placards and hostile imagery.

General Charles de Gaulle, 67, was sworn in at the Elysee Palace as France’s first Fifth Republic president. In a solemn ceremony he pledged to restore national glory and claimed sweeping power to lead the nation and its overseas territories. He succeeds Rene Coty, ending the Fourth Republic after political instability.

Fitzhugh Leads Hunters with 8 Coyotes and 2 Cats

County hunter honors for December go to Bob Fitzhugh who bagged eight coyotes and two bobcats in the ongoing battle against predatory animals in this county. Bud Jahnson was runner up with five coyotes and four bobcats. Elmer E. Pinches and Leslie A. Conner tied with Pinches at three coyotes and five bobcats and Conner with seven coyotes and one bobcat. Pell Koski tallied one bobcat. The county tally ends with 23 coyotes and 13 bobcats killed.

Del Norte Woman Dies After Philo Road Crash

Delia Kesther Bullis of Crescent City died at Mendocino County Hospital from injuries after being struck by a car on Highway 128 near Philo. The driver was August M. Cook, 17, of Philo, and two others, Ned W. Cook and Kenneth Hurst, 15, were in the vehicle. Patrolman Don Delaney reported the scene as funeral arrangements were noted.

Fire wipes out 16 in Oklahoma family home tragedy

In Boswell Oklahoma a devastating blaze killed 16 people including a mother Aire Gardner and her ten children along with five nieces and nephews. Booker Gardner the father was absent on a coon hunting trip and found after the body recoveries.

Thieves Take Three Loaded U S Army Rifles From Ukiah

Ukiah teachers report three discharged U S Army rifles missing from the high school cadets. All three are loaded and plugged making them dangerous to fire. Valued at 10 dollars each, the rifles were reported to police on Wednesday. A separate report notes vehicle fender bending at Smith and Main streets. Ronald Knight was arrested and turned over to the sheriff for investigation on a motor vehicle suspected offense.
