Saxbe vows aggressive DOJ role with oil probe

Attorney General designate William B. Saxbe pledges strict antitrust enforcement and vigorous civil rights work. He calls the Watergate Committee tapes a fishing expedition and says he may urge an inquiry into whether major oil firms deliberately influenced fuel supplies, though he has no evidence. Mendocino College site decision delayed after public meeting

Nearly 70 people crowded Room 501 of the Ukiah fairgrounds for five hours of debate on three permanent campus sites Willits Redwood Valley and York Ranch. The Mendocino Community College district board adjourned without choosing a site and set January 9 for a final decision while weighing costs utilities access and state funding against a free Willits donation and broader district access.

Justifiable Homicide Declared in Willits shooting

District Attorney Duncan James ruled the Willits case justifiable homicide after Richard Glenn Willits a 56 year old Indian resident of the Round Valley Reservation was killed in a Christmas Day gun battle outside his cabin. Deputy Jim Youd and Sgt John Stephenson returned fire after Willits fired on them with a .22 rifle and a later round struck Stephenson in the hip and abdomen. The incident involved tear gas canisters and multiple deputies firing in response before Willits was fatally wounded.

Energy drought to last 10 to 15 years says Simon

Energy director William E. Simon warns the United States faces a 10 to 15 year energy drought. He says relief from the Arab oil embargo is unlikely and new oil and power sources like solar and geothermal are needed. Gas prices expected to rise 8 to 11 cents by March amid rising consumer costs.

Roy Mathers a Ukiah car salesman and former Ukiah police member notified City Clerk Hattie Tillotson he is withdrawing from the council race. Despite filing papers, state law requires his name appear on the March 5 ballot. eight candidates remain including Lorraine Pearson seeking her first full term and Ralph Buxton not seeking reelection. Snowstorm cripples PG&E service in Mendocino Lake counties

A crippling snowstorm disrupted electrical services and traffic, marooning residents in Mendocino and Lake Counties. About 100 customers lack power in the south coast area, with 350 in Philo Yorkville Boonville, 121 Redwood Valley, 35 west of Hopland, Middletown Kelseyville without service. A key transmission line to Redbud substation failed. Fourteen Ukiah crews and 11 external crews dispatched. Ukiah Boonville Road remains closed. Willits and Highway 101 open. another storm could move in tonight with colder temps.

Murder suspect Wallace faced security check at Ukiah Justice Court

An alleged threat to the murder suspect prompted added security outside Ukiah Justice Court as Clyde Denton Wallace, 40, was brought for a preliminary hearing on the Dec 1 homicide of Efren Banda Mora. Sheriff Bartolomie said it was the first time in 20 years a courtroom search was required. Wallace’s arraignment set for Jan 18 before Superior Judge Timothy O'Brien. Charlotte Fern Hoaglen, 32, also goes to trial Monday in Superior Court for the stabbing death of Loyd Dennis Hoaglen, 31, last September.

Mendocino College trustees file for re election

Incumbents Donna Ek Carol Newby and Lou Fortin have filed for re election to the Mendocino College board of trustees. Ek faces Brian DeMent while Newby faces Kenneth Dewell in the March 5 election as filings closed, county elections office reports.
