In the opener Anton’s Pro- Pane defeated CSEA 50 27 as Smythe and Whitaker scored 33 of Anton’s 50. Next week two games are set at Pomolita gym.

With 28 300 games including 10 in the last nine months he headlines Bowling Stars on TV and prizes rise to 1000 dollars per head to win, plus 10 per pin over 700. Norman Van Brocklin, famed Los Angeles Rams quarterback dubbed the Flying Dutchman, announced his retirement after nine NFL seasons. Mendocino County Assessor Webb Brown warns all boat owners must renew registrations by the 1957 deadline. Expired certificates by December 31 require a mailed renewal to W L Brown Ukiah with no registration fee, but a valid certificate must be carried and the bow must display the permanent number. In 1957 Mendocino County registered about 1600 boats, mostly small craft. ad valorem tax applies but no registration fee.
Carmen Basilio, the middleweight champion who dethroned Ray Robinson in a lion-hearted 1957 performance, was named boxer of the year for 1957 by the National Boxing Association in its first 1958 ratings. NBA official Fred Saddy praised Basilio as a lion-hearted fighter who fought bigger foes with dignity and strong training, adding New Year guidance for heavyweight contenders on schedule and competition.
