U S hockey wins Olympic title in close finish

The United States clinched its first Olympic hockey championship in Cortina style, defeating Canada and Russia in an undefeated run. Captain Jack Kirrane led the gold medal ceremony as Avery Brundage saluted the team. Roger Christian sparked the comeback with a tying goal, and Russia’s Sologubov aided the U.S. late rally with a sign-language call for oxygen. Russia topped the medal table with 21 golds and 165.42 total points, Sweden second, the U.S. third with 7 golds and 71 total. Germany took four golds, while Norway and Sweden added three each.

Hopland Tourney Draws Top Area Town Teams

Wild basket ball action looms over the Hopland high school gym March 11 to 13 as teams from Hopland Willits Santa Rosa Ukiah Lakeport Cloverdale Sebastopol and Point Arena compete in the annual Hopland tournament. Host Ukiah Valley’s Anton's Propane Gas leads the local scene with Durable Plywood and Nylander’s of Lakeport among rivals in playoff clashes. Tickets are 30 cents for adults 25 cents for children with games starting at 6 p m each night.

Barons Reach Fourth by Weekend Wins in Hockey

The Cleveland Barons surged to fourth place with weekend victories, edging Buffalo 4-3 and then topping Providence 21. Dave Creighton starred for Rochester with two goals in a 6-3 win over Providence, while the Springfield Indians defeated the Quebec Aces 2-0.

Calhoun Struggles as Hurdler Jones Tops Meet

Ukiah and Fort Bragg clash in late-season basketball showdown

Ukiah varsity and B teams conclude the 1959-60 season with two games at Napa and Healdsburg after a 56-43 loss to Fort Bragg. Fort Bragg's Dalin led with 20 points, O'Brien 14, Luzi 11, while Ukiah pressed and trailed, with Tollini and Philbrick scoring eight each. Ukiah B team won 35-33, aided by Myers on the boards and Jahn's late baskets, finishing 8-7 in 15 starts with Harmon fouled out.

Important meeting in Ukiah Pony and Colt Leagues

Rosé Lucchesi Dominates Ukiah Women’s Bowling Honors

Ukiah’s Rosé Lucchesi swept or shared major titles at the 1960 Ukiah Women’s Bowling Association City Championships. Fabric Lane won the team title with Vera Smalley Dorothy Stanton Midge Ivey Micky Pardini and Betty Bald. Lucchesi paired with Maxine Curtin to win the doubles with 1143 pins and led all events with 1549 scratch and 1720 handicap.

Willits Nine Opens Season Tomorrow
