Air Force Bombers Crash Killing Fifteen In Two States

Two large bombers on routine training missions crashed into farm buildings near Dayton Ohio and Sedalia Missouri killing 15 crew members and civilians. A Wright Patterson based B 50 exploded after striking a barn and house, while a B 47 Stratojet crashed into a farm home killing four and injuring others. A tanker aircraft narrowly escaped disaster earlier in Kansas.

Miss California Invited to Miss Redwood Empire Pageant

Barbara Gene Harris Miss California 1955 may attend the second annual Redwood Empire Pageant in Ukiah on April 20. The Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event, part of the Miss America contest, with a regional winner earning a $250 scholarship and a trip to Santa Cruz to compete for California honors. Eligible contestants must be 18 to 28, single, a high school graduate, and residents of Mendocino or Lake counties.

Meeting to form Mendocino County Historical Society

A Sunday gathering at the Ukiah public library drew about twenty residents from Ukiah Willits and Laytonville to discuss creating a Mendocino county historical society. The temporary committee aims to recruit members and plans a May 6 meeting after reviewing other societies bylaws.

Logging Meeting to Be Cast On NBC Monitor

The Redwood Region Logging Conference, its eighteenth annual, will be broadcast nationally on NBC Monitor. Eisenhower to Hold News Conference Tomorrow Morning

The White House announced President Eisenhower will hold a 7:30 a.m. PST news conference tomorrow. Press Secretary James C. Hagerty would not confirm if the address will announce a second term. no radio or TV time had been requested and a future public address time was not disclosed. The president met Republican leaders before the briefing, offering no definite plan.

Settlement Ends Two-Year Battle Over 100000 Todd Estate

Litigation over a 100000 Fort Bragg estate of Ralph W. Todd Sr. ends in the county courthouse law library. The heirs Alma Todd widow Helen Hahn and Mark W Todd receive equal shares after a settlement that deducts the mansion value from Hahn.

Southeast storm warnings hit Northwestern California coast

A weather bulletin warns of southerly winds 30 to 50 mph along the coast today and tonight with rain spreading from Fort Bragg northward by evening. Rain continues tonight and into Wednesday with heavy amounts likely around Ukiah and Fort Bragg northward. Temperatures range from Napa 58 to 48, Santa Rosa 57 to 46, Ukiah 52 to 44.

Mendocino County 4-H Week Sets Youth Goals and Exhibits

Mendocino County marks National 4-H Week March 3 through 11 with 420 youth in 14 clubs and 129 adult leaders. Members wear green and white caps and participate in demonstrations talks and window displays to highlight achievements and plan projects on farms homes and in communities.

Skeleton found near Fort Bragg identified by UC lab

The University of California report confirms a male skeleton aged 50 to 60 and about five feet nine inches tall found near Fort Bragg. Death occurred about two years ago as per decayed clothing and plant growth. Evidence suggests arthritis, dental work, possible denture, and a metallic hernia belt.

The Ukiah high school junior class talent show raised five hundred dollars. Joyce Horsfall the junior class secretary disclosed the earnings after the show was held recently.

Captain Harder Transfers from Ukiah to Redding

Captain Karl Harder of the California Highway Patrol is transferred from Ukiah to Redding, effective March 1, to oversee Shasta and Trinity counties. He will be succeeded here by Captain A Johnson from San Bernardino. Harder has led the Lake and Mendocino counties patrol since August 1954 and previously served in El Centro Red Bluff Woodland and at the Sacramento HQ.

Police arrest 5 suspects in forgery case in Ukiah

Ukiah police arrested five suspects Monday night in a forgery ring. Herb Anderson Delvin Holder and Sandy Boggs were detained at Perkins and Mason streets by Officers Marcus and Borecky. Elery Toney was seized at Montgomery Ward's by Officers Stipp and Marcus, and Robert Albino at Perkins and Mason. A forged $75 check was cashed at Ward's in July, with other forged sums found at Brownies' Market.

Hobbyists Meet Tomorrow at City Clubhouse

A second call to Ukiah area hobbyists invites the first meeting of people with hobbies and special interests at the municipal clubhouse. Recreation Director Stanley Stafford promotes the gathering to coordinate activities and develop mutual interests among active hobby groups. Mrs Vera Snyder, city librarian, helps plan ongoing meetings.

Train collision kills and injures dozens near Swampscott

A snow storm crash on two Boston and Maine trains near Swampscott Junction killed at least 13 and wounded 60 as one train slammed into the rear of another halted car. A second collision about five miles away injured 14 more passengers on the same line en route to Boston.

Harold Robinson Re elected RRCC President

More than one hundred members of the Redwood Region Conservation Council attended the fifth annual paneling in Eureka despite weather conditions. Ben S. Allen reports this was the largest turnout since RRCC began in May 1950, with reports from committees and the election of 1956 officers and board members.

Chessall Explains School Bond Need to Parents

District superintendent William A. Chessall told parents and teachers at the high school that an $800,000 bond issue is needed for a new classroom building cafeteria and an addition to the main building to serve a growing enrollment. Voters on March 2 will also decide on extending the current tax rate of $1.07 per $100 of property value.

Gray Hair From Space Travel Warned by UC Symposium

Scientists at a UC Berkeley symposium said relativity may slow aging for travelers near light speed while cosmic rays could subtly gray hair. Dr Herman B Chase of Brown warned travelers might return with minor hair changes, based on high altitude rat studies.
