California Senate OKs Local Property Tax Hike to Fund Teachers
The California Senate approved AB2000 allowing counties to raise property taxes from 20 to 30 cents per $100 as part of funding the teachers retirement system. The measure passed 29 to 6 and moves back to the Assembly for concurrence. Senator Deukmejian opposed the plan citing higher taxes without homeowner consent. sponsor Hodda said the extra revenue would cover underfunded retirement costs, with an estimated $137 million in 1978 79, including $18 million from exemptions.
