Rest home fire claims occupant in Ukiah residence
Malcom Rawhes, 63, brother of Ukiah attorney Newell Rawles, died Tuesday afternoon when a blaze swept his room at the Taylor Rest Home on 304 S Hortense Street. Fay Yates alerted the fire department after checking guests. flames poured from the south rear window as firefighters arrived. Investigators say the victim may have fallen asleep while smoking. six fire personnel, two off duty, and 12 volunteers fought the fire. Five guests were sheltered with friends and relatives.
