LDS Church League Champs Triumph In 1962 Final

The Latter-Day Saints Church League team edged the First Methodist Church 60 to 55 to claim the 1962 league title after leading 29 27 at halftime. Gary Borgna and Bob Marsh led LDS with 21 and 15 points respectively, while Gary Floerschinger scored 18 for the Methodists. St Mary’s took third place by defeating First Baptists 38-30 as Ron Hindley 13 and John Ford 12 led.

UCLA Clinches Big Five Title Bid With 75 65 Win

UCLA moved within one win of the Big Five crown after a 75 65 victory over Stanford. Coach Johnny Wooden will guide the Bruins through three more road games at Washington, Stanford, and California as the race tightens with USC and Stanford. Pepperdine leads WCAC. Colorado Collegiate Ski Champion Jim Bombard Wins Title

Jim Bombard of Western State College tops the national collegiate ski championship at Heavenly Valley with 381.86 points. He placed fifth in cross country, third in slalom, second in downhill, and second in jumping to secure the No. 1 ranking.

Ukiah Teams Sweep NRA Sectional Titles At Willows

Ukiah Rifle and Pistol Club master and expert foursomes won the Willows sectional NRA championship with standout scores. The master team totaled 1579 of 1600 led by Ken Cummins 399 and Bob Wood 395, while the expert team finished 1543 as Alvin Rupe 394 and Al Parker 387 paced the squad. Rod Palmer and Irvin Brown contributed strong scores, signaling a promising path to the 1962 national title.

Celtics Clinch East Title Positively, Chase Top Win Percentage

The Boston Celtics clinched their sixth straight Eastern Division title by beating the Syracuse Nationals 110-106. Wilt Chamberlain scored 67 for the Warriors in a Knicks 149-135 win over Philadelphia. Bill Russell and Bob Cousy led Boston with 23 and 20 points. Richie Guerin scored 50 for the Knicks in their upset of Golden State.

Defending Champs Win Far Western Hockey Title

The Denver Pioneers captured the Far Western hockey crown with a 4 3 overtime win over Los Angeles. Duke Dutkowski scored the overtime winner at 6 12 of the 10 minute period as Denver added a second win of the day. Earlier Denver beat Squaw Valley 5 7. Los Angeles defeated San Diego 9 5 and San Diego beat Salt Lake City.

Potter Valley Upsets Hopland Varsity Five

Potter Valley Bears pressured Hopland’s unbeaten league leaders and won 51 to 35 at Hopland. Led by Jim Wilson 18 Bruce Nelson 11 and Steve Foster 10, Potter Valley jumped to an 11-4 start and controlled both ends, holding Hopland to 35 points. Potter Valley’s Ken Bowles coaches a disciplined, all around win with strong rebounding and defense. Hopland’s Tommy Holmes scored 10. Alfredo Knight scored 16 for Hopland in a 61-39 Potter loss.

Seals and Blades Clash in Western Hockey Bid

San Francisco Seals and Los Angeles Blades fight for the Western Hockey League sixth playoff spot as Seattle falls 4-4 to 5-2. San Francisco holds edge in remaining games with seven at home and five on the road while Spokane and Portland lead the Southern Division packs. Ray Cyr scored the decisive sixth goal for the Seals after Seattle mounted a late push.

Calhoun and Gomez Clinch Two Falls in Ukiah Wrestling Bout

Calhoun and Gomez captured two falls to defeat Doh Manoukian in a three fall match before 3,260 fans in Ukiah Mendocino Sonoma and Lake counties. Manoukian had won the first fall, Calhoun and Gomez won the second and decisive fall. Hercules Cortez debuted with a win over Bad Curtice while Jim Dupre beat Jack Terry in the opening bout.

Pony and Colt League Organizing Meeting Planned

The 1962 Ukiah Pony and Colt League holds an organizational meeting next Wednesday at 1 30 PM in the Ukiah Municipal Clubhouse. President Jack Orme will lead election of officers and invite parents coaches managers prospective umpires to attend.

Thomas Returns to Seek International Track Stardom

John Thomas, once a dominant figure in American track, appears ready to resume and chase a return to international glory after setbacks including defeats by Russia's Valeri Brumel and a 4:00.2 mile performance at the National AAU meet. He stayed with high jump, thrilling 16,000 fans at Garden. The 4:00.2 mark set a new AAU record.
