Knowland dies by own action autopsy shows no foul play
William F. Knowland publisher and former U S senator died of a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Autopsy found the body at the water edge near his redwood summer home along the Russian River and a .32 caliber pistol underwater near the body. Officials ruled out foul play and noted no note was found.
