Ukiah Prep hoops finale set with Napa visit

Ukiah high school closes its season with a home Nappa game in Chessall Gym. The 7 pm jayvee and 8 pm varsity bouts precede a big homecoming event featuring senior faculty and alumni basketball and a dance. Proceeds fund a Universal Gym weight machine.

California Beats Washington In Close Pac Eight Clash

California defeated Washington 60 52 in the final period power surge. Center Bob Presley scored 20 to pace the Indians while guard Lesh added 17 after intermission. Stamford’s Mal McElwain led all scorers with 19 points as other regionals include Texas El Paso over Seattle 88 82 and Montana State holding second in the Big Sky.

Ann Haydon Jones Tops Althea Gibson In Pro Invitational

England's Ann Haydon Jones defeated former amateur champion Althea Gibson Darben 6-2 7-5 at the Coliséeum Arena in Oakland in a Pro Invitational match. Darben attributed the loss to trouble returning serves while praising her own strong serves and volley. Pancho Gonzales delivered a fiery show in his win as well, and Robbie and Rod Laver advanced in doubles with a 6-3 3- count victory.

St Johns Expected To Accept At Large NCAA Bid

Eighth ranked St Johns of New York appears poised to accept the first of up to ten at large invitations to the 31st NCAA tournament. Bassler, Fox Hills Pro, Dies at 59 in Culver City

Harry Bassler, head golf professional at Fox Hills County Club for 27 years, died Monday at age 59 in Culver City. He served as past president of the Southern California PGA and had won the Southern California PGA and Southern California Open titles.

Dallas Chaparrals Rout Oaks Behind Beasley’s 24

Dallas Chaparrals defeated the Oakland Oaks 128 to 117 as John Beasley scored 24 points to lead Dallas. Oakland, missing star Rick Barry due to a seasonlong leg injury, saw Ron and Warren Armstrong combine for 33 and 26 points respectively for the Oaks. Miami topped Houston 128 to 114 to extend its Eastern Division lead.
