Spy Rock man found in ravine after missing days

The 78 year old John Chatam, missing since Wednesday while searching for his dog, was found Friday afternoon at the bottom of a 10 foot ravine near Eel River. He hobbled by a wooden leg and died of exposure. coroner could not determine time of death. Chatam lived 39 years in Spy Rock, 12 miles NW of Covelo. he was a retired attorney. The search used a helicopter from Sixth Army and a mounted posse. The victim's dog was located by neighbors earlier.

Ukiah High Students Vie for Bank of America's 1976 Awards

Four Ukiah High School seniors Kathleen Werra Kristy Cook Cathy Woskow and Dorothy Osbourn have been chosen to compete in Bank of America 1976 Achievement Awards program. Twelve other seniors earned merit certificates in fields including Tom Blackburn Perry Stephenson Judy Wong Cathy Butler Jacqueline White and more. The zone event March 24 will judge written work group discussions and civic activities with top winners advancing to regional finals and prize money ranging from 100 to 1000 dollars for various placements.

Mendocino College weighs five sites for new campus

Trustees spent Saturday touring five Mendocino and Lake County sites including Lake County near Clear Lake and Bachelor Valley near Witter Springs plus Willits and Ukiah options. They aim to decide within two weeks or reaffirm Yokayo Ranch as a central campus site, with a final decision possibly delaying state funding.
