Flames Destroy Car on Highway South of Ukiah
A 1950 Mercury FE driven by Cleveland of Ukiah burst into flames on Highway 101 six miles south of Ukiah. Fire Chief Albert Bechtel said the car was engulfed when firefighters arrived. Cleveland had left the scene. Car a total loss. cause undetermined. Weekend calls include a brush fire on Helen Avenue igniting a power pole, both chimney fires on West Clay and Luce Avenue with no damage.

Motorcycle Hits Auto Riders Hospitalized
Joan Parrott of 626 Grove street received a badly lacerated foot in a collision Sunday afternoon between the motorcycle driven by Alton Ashford 22 of Calpella with her as a passenger and the automobile of George W. Lewis of Talmage. The accident occurred three miles east of the Redwood highway as Lewis turned from Talmage road into Henderson lane. the motorcycle struck while attempting a pass. Parrott and Ashford were taken to Ukiah General Hospital. Ashford had minor injuries and was released. He was cited for attempting to pass at an intersection.

Capt Harder’s Father Dies in Ukiah Visit
Conrad K. Harder, father of Captain C K Harder of the California Highway Patrol Ukiah, died at Ukiah General Hospital on Sunday February 20 while visiting his son. He was 69. Surviving are Captain Harder, a brother Ralph Harder of Elk Grove and sisters Rose Higgins of Rio Linda and Marie Connely of San Rafael. Funeral arrangements were handled by Zimmerman Mortuary Ukiah and Klumpp Mortuary Sacramento.

Desperado Holds Harlem Siege in Citys Biggest Gun Battle
Assassin Augusto Robles disarmed detectives and held off 200 police in a two hour Harlem gun battle described as New Yorks largest crime confrontation. He fell mortally wounded after wounding two detectives, while police used tear gas and machine guns to end the siege. Burglars later stole about $1000 in guns and watches from Portlock Hardware, with escape aided by a rear entrance and street parking cover. Early Saturday an attempted break in at Ernie’s Hardware on South Main Street was reported after a man tried a back door and fled east on Clay Street.

Willits Youths Caught Stealing Gas
