Cal Gains Time in PCC Race

Washington hosts Southern California with a chance to move within a half game of California in the Pacific Coast Conference standings. A Huskies win would tighten the race. a loss could end hopes for a share of the lead as Cal and Stanford press. Doug Smart scored 20 as California beat Oregon State 59 to 45 while also beating UCLA 64 to 51.

Healdsburg routes Ukiah with fast pace and depth

Healdsburg overwhelmed Ukiah 89 to 31 as Ukiah struggled with fatigue after three tough games in two weeks. Ukiah outhustled at times but could not match Healdsburg’s pace or height, with Captain Stives and Johnnie Walker scoring from deep and Rich Hutchison contributing for Ukiah.

Delany booed in 880 win at Madison Square Garden

New York crowds booed Ron Delany after he won the half mile in 1:52.2, his 24th straight indoor victory, as 17-year-old John Thomas of Boston University cleared seven feet in the high jump. Delany said he plans to improve and will race the mile in next weekend’s national championships at the Garden where he seeks his 35th straight indoor triumph.
