Deliberations and Ukiah Directory Mail Out Distinguish Local Notice

The Ukiah Chamber of Commerce announced a first time complete business and professional directory being mailed to about 6000 residents across Ukiah and surrounding towns with corrections to be mailed March 1. In Fort Bragg a juror collapsed from a heart attack after over four hours of deliberation, ending the trial of People v. Davino Menucci for selling liquor to a minor. the jury was discharged and retrial planned.

Children’s Fashion Show Rescheduled

The children’s fashion show set for April 2 at First Presbyterian Church is postponed with no new venue named yet. A future location will be announced in the journal once found.

Meeting Postponed by Presbyterian Men

A meeting of Presbyterian men scheduled for tomorrow at 7 a.m. has been rescheduled to Sunday February 20 at 7 30 a.m. The breakfast session will be held at the church.

Hospital Dairy Barn Flares Up Again

A flareup rekindled the hay barn fire at Mendocino State Hospital yesterday and damaged 175 tons of hay. Hospital crews quickly battled the blaze. Ukiah firemen stood by but were not needed. Estimated loss exceeds $15,000.

Ukiah Volunteers Drive Fire Dept to Third Class Rating

An all volunteer fire department is credited with pushing Ukiah toward a rare third class fire insurance rating, with the rate set to drop to 30 cents once achieved. Paid drivers number six, while 34 volunteers handle firefighting and all equipment purchases totaling over $12,750 funded by the volunteers’ dances and labor. The group built and supplied gear, a drill house, alarm room, and control board, saving taxpayers and partnering with local agencies.

Knowland Urges SF as Site for GOP Convention

Senate Republican Leader William F. Knowland urged San Francisco as the site for the 1956 GOP National Convention after a White House meeting. GOP Chairman Leonard Hall said Chicago and Philadelphia also bid as the Republican committee planned to pick the site Thursday. Knowland, from Oakland, said he spoke with Mayor Elmer Robinson who confirmed San Francisco’s interest and noted the city’s facilities.

Navy Plane Sights Air Liner Wreck

An American Navy search plane located what authorities believe is the wreckage of the Sabena DC6 airliner missing after a Rome bound flight from Brussels. The site, 40 miles from the Adriatic on Mt Vettore, sits at 4250 feet as crews search for the 29 aboard including four Americans and Miss Italy 1953 Marcella Mariana.

Nevada A-Bomb Test Delayed For 24 Hours

The Atomic Energy Commission postponed the 1955 A-bomb test for at least 24 hours due to shifting winds and heavy cloud cover. The blast was planned from a 500 foot tower at Yucca Flat near Las Vegas, with safety measures to protect Pioche Caliente and other nearby communities. Five to Compete In Oratory Here Wednesday

Five Ukiah Union High students will contest at 8 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Building in the 19th oratorical contest sponsored by the American Legion. The winner advances to the District One event at Fortuna on February 27 and then to area and state contests leading to national competition. Kelvin Kennedy won last year and placed fourth in the area. Prizes are 15, 10, and 5 dollars. Norman Williamson chairs the local event for Lewis White-Post.
