Pistols Blaze In Fish-Game Target Shoot

Two new trophies for marksmanship were awarded by the Department of Fish and Game. Bob Hudson of Gustine won the Jamie H. Smith Individual Trophy with 281 of 300. A four-man team from the DFG regions won the Jamie H. Smith Team Trophy with 1072 of 1200. The event, held on a 25-yard course with 38 caliber pistols, marked the first annual competition for the perpetual trophies.

Sonny Liston appears set to sign this week for a title defense against Floyd Patterson. The June bout may be staged in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, or Chicago, with Championship Sports Inc. authorized to finalize a $100 million heavyweight clash.

A major fire at Yokayo Bowl scorched most pins valued up to twenty thousand dollars while machines remained intact. First Baptists Upset LDS to Narrow Church League Race

First Baptists, led by Kit Weaver 22 points, upset previously unbeaten Latter-day Saints 58 to 46 in Ukiah Valley Church League. Al Wiemeyer Art Peoples Greg Farmer and Chet Crabtree supported as LDS dropped to leave a tight race with Methodists and St Mary’s vying for top spots.

Royals Beat Warriors in Record Night

The Cincinnati Royals defeated the Philadelphia Warriors 153 to 132 as multiple Garden records fell. Wilt Chamberlain scored 61 for Philadelphia, while Cincinnati broke numerous marks including a game high 152 points and 36 field goals in a half led by Oscar Robertson's 2 points in the early surge.

South Ukiah Little League Sets Meeting at Oak Manor

South Ukiah Little League officials announced a special organizational meeting at Oak Manor school tomorrow night at 7 30 for parents of Little League age boys living south of Perkins Street and in the Talmage area. Sponsors managers and umpires are invited.

Ukiah Reserves Show Improvement In Hopland Tilts

Ukiah Varsity and B reserves narrowed gaps with Hopland last night at Hopland. Varsity reserves lost 49 to 36 as Wendel McCarn led Hopland with 16 points and Greg JoJola added 11 while Gary Shimmin paced Ukiah with 13. Joe Jorola scored 12 to lift Hopland B past Ukiah B 42 to 37.

Montreal's Bill Durand, star goalie of the Canadians, has become the only NHL goaltender to win the Vezina Trophy six times. The award honors the goalie on the team with the lowest goals against average in the league.

Evangelicals overpower in 23 point barrage by Ron Mattson

In a Church League game Evangelicals led by Ron Mattson shot past Faith Lutheran as Capt. Nelson Redding was absent from the scoring. In a separate match Faith Lutheran fell 37-33 to the Methodists where Roger Howard led with 10 points and Ron McElroy, Red Wright and seven others contributed scoring. The Methodists moved into a first place tie at 8-1 with one night left. First Baptist and St. Mary’s trailed at 7-2 and 6-2 in the ten team league.

California deer depredation hits record high in 1961

A year end report from the Department of Fish and Game shows depredation permits led to a record 2484 deer killed in 1961 across California, with Lake County noting 112 and Ventura 331. Bears, beavers and wild boars also left counts, while no elk were killed under depredation permits.
