James H H Davis age 37 was sentenced to San Quentin by Superior Judge Hale McCowen on two counts forgery and cashing a worthless check. The judge denied probation citing a prior felony record and ordered consecutive sentences. Davis admitted issuing a $35 check to Earl Workman of Laytonville with no funds and forging W R Bagley’s name on a $30 check.
Ukiah Scouts marked the national organization’s 45th anniversary with a Government Day program. Troops 45 49 46 65 59 62 visiting city offices fire station and sheriff’s department to learn operations, court procedure, radar use and police fingerprinting while cub scouts joined in.
Lawrence Parks, U. S. Marine Corps recruiter, has announced that the Marine Corps will continue to accept a limited number of qualified applicants for enlistment each month in spite of recent curtailments in recruiting activities.
Ukiah theatre-goers saw The Fourposter a marriage spanning 35 years as portrayed by Anne Martin and Robert van Hooten in Civic Drama Guild’s Wednesday evening production. Soroptimists International of Ukiah sponsored. future Civic Drama Guild plays include Stalag 17 and The Velvet Glove with stage gear from H and H Furniture, Harold Bertsch, and support from the Soroptimist Club.
Ukiah Grangers and other attendees are advised the Grange social will be Saturday at Yom instead of tonight. Dancing and card games are on the program with a nominal fee for the evening.
Rain swept harbor scene reports the British ship City of Bristol colliding with the American liner President Harding. Coast Guard says City of Bristol is sinking as the two vessels faced the waterway in New York Harbor. A separate item notes a young ex convict executed at San Quentin for a brutal kidnapping and murder of a Korean War veteran Read Jonsen. More: Moscow radio cites the Supreme Court in a six member retrial or reform context.
Vice President Richard M. Nixon told Mexico City’s Chamber of Deputies that an underlying Americanism unites the United States and Mexico beyond superficial differences. He praised Mexicans for warm receptions, urged Congress to convey to unseen Mexicans the goal of stronger inter American ties based on common interests and mutual respect. Nixon also noted Moscow tensions heighten the need for closer American friendship.
Britain with the United States and New Zealand agrees to wind up UN efforts for a Formosa cease fire for the time being. Private diplomacy will guide initial steps while an international conference may be set later if informal talks succeed. Chou En Lai reportedly rejects participation.
Pierre Pflimlin began talks with political leaders in Paris to form a cabinet with observers giving a 50-50 chance of success. The Socialist party refused to join, and Pflimlin sought backing from Antoine Pinay and Mendes-France allies as he pursues the post in the wake of the government crisis.
A major Arctic cold front engulfed the nation from the Rockies to the Atlantic. Temperatures plunged to 27 below in the Dakotas and Minnesota, with widespread subzero readings and a 50 degree drop in Pittsburgh. Snow and ice disrupted travel. fires and deaths rose as utilities cut power to hundreds of sites. In Iowa a log home burned as a father rescued his children, and two women in Iowa were killed when a train struck their car while windows were frosted shut.
Increasing cloudiness with rain late today from Eureka northward and a chance of light rain tonight or Saturday. Cooler afternoons and warmer tonight with highs around 60s and 39 to 40s coastally. Southerly winds 10 to 20 mph near the coast, up to 30 mph north of Cape Mendocino. Fort Bragg area remains cloudy today through Saturday with probable rain tonight or Saturday and cooler afternoons.
American and Nationalist forces complete demolition on Tachens Islands amid 65 mph winds and heavy seas. Troops and equipment to be moved to ships as air force readies to bomb the area once last demolition is secured. Rear Admiral Sabin reports final ashore action to end soon with heavy weather limiting ships and crews.
A meeting will be held at Red Bluff on Monday February 21 with district fair representatives from northern California and Western Fairs Association officials. Twenty six fair associations will be represented with George P Anderson and Pierce Stipp attending. Ukiah Riding Club will handle the horse show and directors George P Anderson Horace Fahrney and Ella Butler will meet Ray Walsh to discuss plans.
Paul Sutterley, secretary of the Mendocino County Chamber of Commerce and Ukiah chamber, spoke at the Mendocino County Realtors dinner meeting about the proposed Coyote Valley Dam. President Ken Ballou presided at Maple Cafe. New salesmen George Doson and Phil Morris attended. A report on the Education and Sales conference planned for Ukiah in June was given. Gene Schamber received a copper plaque from Mary Frohn honoring his 1954 leadership.
A Gary housewife on a morning TV show halted the interview to announce a lunch money emergency for her three children. She urged a friend to assist, but the children interrupted by raiding the piggy bank and heading to school.
HEALDSBURG The 35th annual Redwood Empire Association convention will be held in Lake County in October 2022 with Hobergs Resort as headquarters. The site was chosen by the association's Executive Board, led by Reed W. Robinson, president, after review of highway, park and conservation policies.
