Willits City Council Sifts Insurance Bids And Projects

Willits Mayor Ottis Smith called a special meeting to seek bids from insurers after Hartford canceled the city policy. The council approved a land fill east of the rodeo grounds to serve as a ball park and parking area, and heard a vandalism report on the Veterans Hall. Police and civic efforts to curb vandalism were discussed. The council moved 2500 dollars to aviation capital funds for a new hangar and fuel pumps, with federal matching funds. Police officer Cecil Caldwell will attend a seven week police science program at College of the Redwoods. Other actions included authorizing the purchase of a new car from the county and a new bicycle program.

UC Berkeley schedules an all day High School Day orientation for February 27 to introduce northern California students to campus. Bike Crash Injures Ukiah Youth Near Lantern Inn

Mike Crudo, 13, of Ukiah, was taken to Ukiah General Hospital after his bicycle hit a power pole near the Lantern Inn at the South State and Gobbi intersection. Ambulance crews from Ukiah Ambulance Service and the fire department responded. He may have minor to moderate head and leg injuries.

PG&E speaker to address Kiwanis on nuclear power

Kit Newton of Pacific Gas and Electric will speak at the Kiwanis Club noon meeting in the House of Garner. He will discuss nuclear power and the environment and likely PG&E’s plan to build a reactor near Point Arena. The Kiwanis Key Club meets tonight at 6:30 in shop one at Ukiah High School.

Potter youth McCoy arrested on probation violation warrant

Robert Andrew McCoy, 18, of Potter Valley, was taken into custody Monday night on a bench warrant for probation violation. He was booked at Ukiah city jail after prior arrest for disturbance at Ukiah High School and nonpayment of fines. Officer Roy Mathers led the arrest.

Tipsy Driving Arrest After Court Appearance in Ukiah

Antonio Ortega Silva, 39, of Ukiah, was arrested at the courthouse Friday on drunk driving, open container, and driving without a license charges. He was booked into county jail after his court appearance. arresting deputy was Craig Wayment.

Demos picked as losers floor fight on Medi Cal

The first big floor fight of the legislative session centers on Gov Reagan 10 percent Medi Cal cutbacks. Democrats, though the new majority, are expected to lose as doctors nursing homes and Republicans rally against the $70 million savings. Burton urges a reform bill, while Reagan aides and several GOP leaders oppose it as too costly.
