Two Die In Head-On Lumber Truck Crash Near Willits
A head-on collision about five miles south of Willits Tuesday evening killed William B. Thompson 26 of Ukiah and Clifford Smith 30 of Ukiah. A Diamond T lumber truck collided with a trailer driven by Floyd E Purcell of Napa with a sedan bearing both men. The crash at 11 40 left lumber scattered and halted traffic for three hours. Purcell escaped injury. Thompson likely the driver in the sedan, died wedged behind the wheel while Smith was ejected through the windshield. Bodies were at Anker Mortuary Willits pending funeral plans for Thompson. Smith's arrangements were not yet announced.

Superior Judge William Porter Guthrie sentenced two 18 year old Arcata youths to jail terms and $100 fines for firing BB caps at 30 buildings from Arcata to Ukiah last January 14. Darrell Foster got 90 days with 30 suspended. Ronald Edwards 90 days with 60 suspended. Each must pay Humboldt County property damage. A 16 year old was certified to Juvenile Court. The incident involved Ukiah Willits Laytonville Piercy Gardenerville Miranda Weott, not linked to Arcata Union High School basketball.

Mrs. Carrie Edwards widow of the late Ben Edwards fell Sunday morning at her home 704 North Oak street and broke her hip. She was taken to Ukiah General Hospital where she is under the care of Dr. Glenn Miller. Her brother Lawrence Waugh a Mendocino State Hospital employee was at work when the accident occurred. Edwards could not rise until Waugh returned at 3 p.m. and a neighbor who was too deaf to hear earlier alerted.

Philo Man Jailed for Battery and Gun Threat
Roy Morris of Philo is jailed on charges of battery and displaying a firearm in a rude and angry manner. Sheriff Bartolomie said deputies arrested him after Mrs. Dolly Morris, his sister in law, accused him of assault and firing a shot into the ground from a 30-30 rifle during a heated argument at the Earl Morris home. Bail was set at 250 dollars.

Laytonville Youth Held for Burning Teacher With Acid
An 18 year old Laytonville student, Danny Herman, was certified to the Juvenile Court after a Long Valley hearing for battery and malicious mischief. He allegedly poured sulfuric acid on English teacher Margaret Schriner's chair, burning her clothes. Four fellow students under 18 aided in obtaining the acid. they were released to their parents with no charges filed.
