Stipp defends TV firm right to extend lines against city

Span ish Mountain Television Corp president Pierce Stipp told the city council last night the firm has right to extend lines under its franchise even after a rate increase from 3 to 5 dollars. City Attorney Burke said the council set conditions last fall, including city permission for extensions. council could revoke the rate hike if not met. Stipp promised board review and audits, noted about 1000 hookups, three trunklines, and limited new connections unless justified. He cited 2000 dollars local taxes and 200,000 dollars in business generated for city merchants, arguing the rise enabled widespread service. Mayor Nix urged adherence to franchise terms and noted potential substitution if Spanish Mountain did not supply TV reception.

Ukiah seeks third class fire rating with new 1000 gallon pumper

City of Ukiah plans to approach the State Board of Fire Underwriters for a third class fire risk rating by funding a new 1000 gallon pumper at about 18000 dollars in the 1955 56 budget. Five civic leaders will survey a site outside the downtown area for a future civic center, with a report due by March 16.

Poplin Case Bound Over to Superior Court

Bailet Curley Poplin 24 of Willits is bound over to the superior court on a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor after a preliminary hearing. A 14 year old Willits High School freshman testified about a January party at Poplin’s home where beer was supplied. Poplin remanded to jail in 500 dollars cash bail as Star Handley 20 also faces a preliminary hearing next Tuesday.

Northwestern California region sees fair conditions today through Friday with a slight warmup. Napa reaches 60 with 30, Ukiah 58 27, Santa Rosa 60 28 as coastal winds shift from 15-25 mph to 8-18 mph tonight. Fort Bragg area reports similar fair weather and wind easing tonight.

Deputy Races Diphtheria Serum to Remote Child

Sheriff’s Deputy Norman Cook sped 35 mountain miles from Willits to Fort Bragg in 43 minutes to rush diphtheria serum to an 11 year old Rockport girl. The serum was in short supply after a hospital found stocks used. the patient is in good condition. Deputy Cook, based at Fort Bragg, learned the call while en route home after delivering a prisoner. He discovered the patient was his third cousin, Sandra DeAlavaria, daughter of Mr and Mrs John DeAlavaria.

Oil Poisoning Incident In Ukiah Child Recovers

Craig Fedder, 16 months old, drank decongestant oil Mrs. Fedder left cooling in a pan. He grimaced, smelled of oil, then had convulsions and was rushed to Mendocino Medical Center. Dr. Bernard K. Steen pumped his stomach. he recovered at home.

City To Call For Bids On Safeway Site

The city council ordered a call for bids on the School street property currently leased to Safeway Stores. Bids open March 16 as the council also plans to use part of the sale price to acquire another site for a future civic center. Mayor Leonard Nix will appoint a three citizen committee to scout locations with proposals due before bid opening. The council aims to secure the property within a year. The decision satisfied council members Herman Runkel Henry Mercer and Richard Mazzoni and was greeted with applause. Local business leaders urged selling the Safeway Jet site amid broad support for central business district improvement.

Ukiah Man Nominated for State Junior GOP Post

Joseph T. Shipman of Ukiah, vice president of Young Republicans for Region I, is nominated for national committeeman from California. If elected, he would be the first northern Californian in the role. Shipman and his wife travel to San Diego for a three day convention at the Manor Hotel. Northern California Young Republicans gain influence as Shipman leads Mendocino representation on a slate of state officers.

GOP Vallejo Meeting Draws Mendocino Women

Mendocino county will be represented at the first 1955 Northern Division Republican Women meeting in Vallejo on Friday February 4. Mrs Blanche Iles Northern Division vice president will join Ukiah women Mrs Charles Kasch Mrs Arthur Schilder Mrs Charles Bell and Miss Shirley Perry leaving Willits early in the morning. Gunman Robs Theater Box Office in Boston

A gunman held up the Keith Memorial Theater box office Tuesday night and escaped with about 28 dollars. The theater premieres Six Bridges To Cross, a film about the Brinks robbery in Boston.

Mendocino District Formed for Coyote Valley Dam Area

The Mendocino County Boundary Commission certified the water district boundaries creating the Mendocino County Russian River Flood Control and Water Conservation Improvement District. The benefitted zone extends from AL WALLA 2d of MA through Calpella Ukiah Hopland and to the county southern line along the Russian River watershed. The district will cover lands drained by the Russian River downstream from the dam site and any upstream areas directly benefitted by the water supply. Maps and petition samples were posted as Ullah city Chamber of Commerce sponsors begin petition circulation.

Attorney Charles Kasch of Ukiah will attend a San Francisco meeting Monday at a statewide water conservation conference of the California State Chamber of Commerce. He expects a north versus south showdown after Attorney General Brown ruled origin counties have prior water claims. Court Convicts Nine Truck Operators

SAN FRANCISCO Five Northern California truck operators were found guilty in municipal or justice courts during December of violations of the State Public Utilities Code. Most fines for hauling property for hire without a permit. A total of 12 truck operators statewide paid $825 in fines. one case dismissed. Northern Californians named include Louis Buzzine Novato no permit $50 fine. Joe Louis Suisun no permit $300 bail forfeited. Aaron Reddekopp Willits no permit $25 bail forfeited. Anastacia and Angelina Treiniega Sacramento operation during suspension of permit $50 fine suspended. I B Campbell Lamont failure to display PUC permit plates $50 fine. Campbell had paid $10 in 1853 for some violation. AUGUSTA Me UP report states Sen Robert Martin filed a bill to repeal 16 pages of street railroad laws. trolleys haven’t operated there in eight years.
