The 1971 Heart Fund campaign began today and runs through February 28. Highlights include a business district canvass a courthouse coffee hosted by the Jaycettes and informational radio television and newspaper spots.
Kiwanians met at Chuck Wagon on Jan 27 with Carl Schleggel presiding to talk about the newly shown film Woodstock. Franks Herring Jr of Santa Rosa will attend the Feb 3 board meeting, and Schloegl will join a Sacramento gathering Feb 13 with other club presidents. Police report multiple marijuana and drug arrests in Ukiah and surrounding areas, plus burglary at the Ukiah golf pro shop. Heart Week volunteers from Ukiah area schools are listed with contact details for participation.
City police arrested Ruben Want, 18, of Talmage, early Saturday in the act of burglary at Rasco's Department Store in Yokayo Shopping Center. Tip from youths led officers to the building. Want had kicked a window and allegedly hit the till before arrest by Officer Richard Perry with help from Officers Miller, Mathers and McCoey. Francisco Eugene Avelino, 25, of Ukiah, was arrested at his home Saturday evening on a citizen's arrest by Elsie Avelino for disturbing the peace. He was transported to county jail and booked by Deputy Ralph Maize. A theft report filed Friday by Vaughn Hudman with Deputy Carl Kyle claimed a $150 citizen's band radio was taken from a vehicle parked in his Laytonville driveway.

Russell Frye, 80, of Monterey was arrested in Willits on drunk driving driving without a license and possession of a stolen vehicle. He was booked in Ukiah jail. Gomer Layton, 62, of Laytonville was arrested on U S 101 north of Laytonville on drunk driving and driving without a license charges.
Sheriff's investigators probe after a steer at the Bradford Ranch on Mountain House Road in San Mateo County was killed. Robert Bradford reports someone struck the steer between the eyes and removed the hind quarters, in a grand theft livestock case received Saturday.
George Albert Mason of Philo pled guilty to assault and was fined $600 by Superior Court Judge Wayne P. Burke. Mason was arrested by sheriff's deputies last September and has until August 1 to pay. In Covelo, 66 year old Joseph Thomas Silva died of an apparent heart attack at his home. Next of kin is his wife Sheryl Silva. funeral services are pending.
United Press International reports Hell Michigan at 9 below zero as temperatures plummet across the Upper Midwest. Readings 10 to 20 below are common, with frost and freeze warnings in Louisiana and Mississippi. A hard freeze looms in Northern Georgia and cold wave warnings issued for North Carolina and Northwest Florida. North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota issue travel advisories as winds gust to 40 mph and snow from last week lingers.
Martin Corbett Hurt a life long Round Valley resident and retired rancher died Sunday in Ukiah. Born May 1, 1888 in Covelo he was the son of the late Mr and Mrs Charles Hurt and survived by a sister Vera Geise of Grass Valley. Services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Covelo Presbyterian Church with Rev. Richard Wise officiating. Burial at Covelo Cemetery. He was a member of the Covelo Masonic Lodge. Eversole Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
Funeral services at Eversole Mortuary Ukiah for Anna Celeste McPhail 87 lifelong resident who died Friday. She is survived by a daughter Irnita Hitchcock Ukiah four grandchildren nine great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Contributions preferred to cancer fund. Funeral services for Delmar E. Laster of Calpella will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Eversole Mortuary with Rev. Donald Cox presiding. He died Saturday in San Rafael at age 34 after 30 years in the state. Interment follows at Ukiah Veterans Cemetery. Survived by parents E.R. and Mrs. Laster of Calpella, five brothers Martin James Lloyd Dennis and William of Calpella, and two sisters Ann Miller of Calpella and Lavaughn Petitt of Redwood Valley.

Tom Stout aged 20 from Ukiah walked from his wrecked car after it swerved to avoid a deer on Old Calpella Road north of Milani Road at 2 10 a m Saturday. The car hit a power pole and damaged 20 feet of fencing before Stout sought CHP assistance and went to a local hospital for a health check.
James Ismond 16 drove a car that lost control on Madrone Drive possibly due to faulty brakes. The vehicle went through a fence and rolled but landed on its wheels. passengers Randy Steinbrenner 17 and Russ Foord 16 were unharmed. Nolan Henry 18 was arrested Friday at a local motel for possession of marijuana and furnishing marijuana. Police Officers Roy Mathers and Frank Seward led the arrest and Henry was jailed.
