New DOT Approved Ignition Interlock System
The Department of Transportation will approve a new ignition interlock system for cars built after January 1972. Readiness to buckle up before starting the engine is now seen as an acceptable alternative to airbags. The American Safety Belt Council forecasts a large rise in seat belt usage and thousands of lives saved, with the system adding about $20 to car cost versus $200 for airbags.
