EPA proposes gradual ban on leaded gas with unleaded by 1978
The EPA announced a two stage plan to limit lead in gasoline, aiming for unleaded fuel at all stations by mid 1974 and at all pumps by 1978. The plan faces a lawsuit and criticism from lawmakers while estimated consumer costs hover around one cent per gallon. Environmental groups filed suit urging faster action, arguing lead free fuel is feasible within two years at little extra cost. Senator Hart questioned the pace, noting health risks from leaded fuel and supporting earlier elimination at under two cents per gallon.
