California drought fears rise as La Niña strengthens
Federal scientists say La Niña conditions are strengthening and may persist through spring, raising concerns of a drier winter in California. December so far brings little rain with San Jose at 43 percent of average and San Francisco at 52 percent, while Southern California remains unusually dry. Despite stored reservoir water from last year’s storms, experts warn of potential drought if storms do not materialize, though future heavy rains could offset deficits.
