One Dead and One Wounded in Christmas Morning Shootout
In Coveo near Round Valley two deputies and a sheriff s sergeant responded to a cabin gun dispute. Richard Glenn Willits 67 died on the operating table after a blaze of shots shattered the calm. Sgt Stephenson was wounded and required surgery. deputy Youd was also hit as officers returned fire. The incident occurred Christmas morning as Willits refused to surrender and fired through a plywood wall.

Christmas Robbery by Escaped Convicts in Cobb Mountain
In Lake County two escaped convicts, George Golder and Garland Berry, robbed John Dawkins and his wife at gunpoint Christmas night. They stole $13 and a 1973 Chevrolet after tying the couple and cutting the phone line. Dawkins freed himself, police issued an APB, and the suspects were later captured in Rutherford by St Helena police and state officers. They were returned to Lake County and charged with armed robbery escape and vehicle theft.
