Jekyll-Hyde Christmas Figures In Germany
In Frankfurt German customs blend Nikolaus and Knecht Ruprecht as Christmas messengers. Nikolaus visits Dec 5-6, leaves gifts in shoes, wears red robe and bishop’s mitre, while Ruprecht, an ogreish figure, spanks naughty children and may trap them in a sack. The old demon is fading as modern stores portray Ruprecht as a friendly helper to Nikolaus.
