Texas suspends welterweights Armando Aragon and Goldstein after a failed San Antonio fix plot. Aragon admits arranging a dive with Goldstein and receiving monetary promises, while Goldstein cooperates with investigators prompting further action. Hank Aaron leads National League with .328 after 1956 season.
Ukiah B high school's basketball suffers a decisive 69 to 28 defeat at the hands of George Washington 2 from San Francisco. Terrific Washington start produced a 6-0 opening run and a wide margin, with Ukiah rallying later but unable to mount a sustained attack.
The California Bears defeated Arizona State 74 to 61 in Tempe. Coach play limited to 20 minutes of first string action as they cruised past the Sun Devils with a largely reserve lineup.
Stayton poured past Talmage 106 to 33 in Ukiah Valley Recreational Men s Basketball. Bob Watts set a city league scoring record with 19 FGs and 10 free throws for 48 points as Crump led the losers with 30. Studebaker marks and two team records also fell before a holiday break.
Coach Buddy Parker balked at signing a 1957 deal as Lions officials led by Edwin J. Anderson offered about thirty thousand dollars. Parker cited personal reasons and said he would stay until the current contract expires, while questions swirled over the team’s future after a Bears game brain concussion incident involving Meadows and Layne.
Rams veteran Tom Fears accused Detroit Lions coach Buddy Parker of dirty play and urged him to clean up his own backyard. He named Lions players Gil Mains and Jim David as the dirtiest, amid escalating NFL charges over injuries to Bobby Layne and other incidents.
The National League named former pitchers Jen Burkhart of the St. Louis Cardinals and Tony Venton as umpires for 1957. Arty Gore and Bill Engeln were also listed in the announcement. In boxing, Ernie Parando of Bayonne New Jersey and Angelo Defendis of Brooklyn were certified fit for the December 24 bout at St Nicholas Arena.
Ukiah's varsity stayed close throughout the contest but Washington of San Francisco pulled away late to win 43 to 34. Ukiah leaders include Leroy Chase Richard Huckins Arvin Reed and Fred Leuchfeld with Kamla and Huckins each scoring seven. Washington top scorers Johnson and Allman posted 12 each though several stars did not travel.
Lanky Mexican boxer Gaspar Ortega of Mexico seeks a second win over ex welterweight champion Tony DeMarco at Madison Square Garden. The rivals meet in a 10 round bout telecast by NBC at 10 p m. Ortega vows to prove last month’s split decision was not a fluke while DeMarco is a 2 1 favorite due to his left hook and the disputed prior verdict.
Coral Gables Florida Bobby Sorensen won three winter races at Tropical Park including two long shots Lecame paying 90 00 Viking Victory 67 80 and Chateau 6 10 as outsiders.
NFL Commissioner Bert Bell announced he found Norb Hecker did not hear of or participate in any plot to injure Detroit's Bobby Layne or other players. Bell questioned Hecker thoroughly and received negative responses confirming no malicious intent or involvement with pools to harm players. He emphasized no NFL player would seek to injure another.
Detroit Lions defeated the Los Angeles Rams 31 to 21, four years after failing to clinch the Western Division title against the Chicago Bears. Pat Tillman sparking the attack with 19 points.
