Wrestlers Ibel and Newman Face Etchison and Stern Tomorrow

Ibel and Newman, who began as apprentices in a watch factory and later made careers in wrestling, meet Etchison and Stern tomorrow in a lively match. The card opens at 8 30 with John Swenski facing Vincent Lopez, followed by John Barnet versus Pete Peters. Proceeds support VFW community projects.

Beliveau Dominates Weekly Hockey Scoring Race

Montreal veteran Jan Beliveau led the NHL weekly scoring with 45 points. Detroit stars Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay shared second with 34 points, Howe adding three goals and two assists while Lindsay posted two goals and three assists.

Casares Nearly Sets NFL Rushing Mark

Rick Casares led the Chicago Bears to the Western Division title and finished the 1956 regular season 20 yards shy of the all time rushing record with 426 yards in 62 games. Ollie Matson had 924 yards for the Cardinals and Steve Van Buren had the previous high. Bobby Layne was top scorer with 99 points. Norm Van Brocklin led in punting with a 43.1 yard average.

Betting Sets New High on Tracks as Crowds Grow

New York United Press reports 1956 saw track betting reach a record 2,213,843,691 wagers across 34 states with 29,332,601 people betting. Attendance also set a high, rising 3.2 percent to break all prior marks in thoroughbred racing.

Ukiah Varsity and B Teams Prep for George Washington

Ukiah high school prepares for tomorrow’s games against George Washington of San Francisco. The doubleheader features a crack light weight matchup at 7:00 p.m. and a main event between strong squads from Ukiah and the Eagles between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m. The matchup follows Christmas break with hopes for a large crowd and includes notes on Ukiah players from the Healdsburg Invitational and a banquet honoring Huckins as an all tournament first team selection. The Eagles are noted for their tough press and recent blowout wins over Santa Rosa, while Ukiah looks to improve before Northwest league play in January.

Airport Runway Improvements Near Completion

Washington reports the United States grants asylum to 40 Olympic athletes from Russian satellite nations who refused to return home.
