California business group urges gas tax rise to spur jobs

California captains of industry urge Gov. Brown to back a temporary gasoline tax increase and relax environmental rules to cut unemployment. The task force recommends highway and housing projects, tax reforms, and streamlined permitting to accelerate job creation while warning environmental standards must be reassessed to reduce regulatory drag.

Board seeks public input on tax reform plan

Ukiah and Fort Bragg meetings will be scheduled to gather citizen views on tax reform. The board of supervisors, after receiving protest letters, asked County Administrator Al Beltrami to arrange sessions and invite State Sen. Behr and Assemblyman Keene. They noted property owners have grievances with taxing formulas while directing attention to school districts, cities, and special districts that make up over half the tax bill. Tea Bags for Taxes has spread countywide, with about 175 bags received so far, and residents urged action at the state level amid three constitutional amendments pending in the legislature to shift or equalize burdens.

Christmas Tree Lane Lighting Ceremony in Ukiah

The Ukiah Ministerial Association presents the annual Christmas Tree Lane lighting Friday at 7 p.m. at the corner of Seminary Avenue and School Streets. Sponsored by the Greater Ukiah Chamber of Commerce. Lights turn on at 7 sharp. All welcome to attend with children to sing carols. A meditation will be given by the Rev Roy Wisner and Bob Kauffman will lead caroling.

Wallace Behm enters race for Ukiah city councilman

Businessman Wallace Behm becomes the sixth candidate in Ukiah’s March 2 1976 city council election for three seats. He filed nomination papers Tuesday joining Enemark Snyder Weller Feibusch and Cox Jr. Hamburg and Burke have papers out. He is 53 and owns Behm's Union 76 on Talmage Road. He cites labor relations business and real estate experience and calls for less deadlock and better neighborhoods parks and downtown. He is married with six children and has two sons running the service station.

Senate panel backs halt to U.S. Angola aid

A Senate foreign relations subcommittee unanimously adopted two measures to stop covert U.S. military aid to Angola and urge withdrawal of foreign troops. The moves come ahead of a secret session on the defense appropriations bill and amid reports of about 50 million dollars funneled to Angola via Zaire or Zambia.

Fair conditions prevail in Northwestern California with fog or low clouds over coastal waters and onshore areas as well as night and morning fog in valleys. Increasing high clouds north tonight through Thursday, little temperature change, light winds. Ukiah expected 36 to 58, Fort Bragg 42 to 55.

Fromme Given Life for Attempted Presidential Murder

Lynette Fromme received a life sentence for attempting to assassinate President Ford, after motions for a new trial were rejected. Judge MacBride called for silence as Fromme shouted, and marshals carried her from the courtroom. The ruling allows parole after 15 years.

County hearing on reorganizing Mendocino justice courts set

County supervisors schedule public hearing for Friday January 2 at 10 a.m. to consider a court system reorganization ordinance with action due by January 3 to trigger a 30 day effective period. Nine judgeships may change through consolidation or a shift to municipal court, with retention talks for Point Arena and Covelo. George Yanich Jr. remains at large after a dramatic escape from a Lake County hospital last November and a separate Los Angeles arrest and flight incident involving a kidnapped driver.

County okays reduced CDC board powers and duties

County supervisors move to cut the Community Development Commission from 15 to nine members while clarifying its powers. The amended ordinance would authorize the CDC to administer HUD funded Section 8 and 23 housing programs, and position it with redevelopment agency powers as it oversees two housing programs and $610,000 in federal funds. Fort Bragg appointee Jack Azevedo resigns citing HUD regulations and a call to remove the CDC steering committee. Additional discussion set for next meeting.
