Daylight time compromise clears House for Senate
The House approved by voice vote a daylight saving time bill, sending it to the Senate. If signed, clocks shift forward one hour on Sunday, Jan. 6, with year round DST until the last Sunday in April 1975 and reversion to standard time thereafter. The measure allows presidential exemptions and preserves Hawaii Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands from DST. Indiana and split states may keep or adjust one time zone.

Experts unsure of cause for 18 minute Nixon tape buzz
A panel of technical experts told Chief Judge Sirica they cannot determine who or what caused an 18 minute buzz on a June 20 1972 White House tape. They ruled out Rose Mary Woods typewriter or lamp and warned the obliterated conversation probably cannot be retrieved with advanced equipment. The panel noted a possible role for the Uber Universal 5000 machine but said further study is needed. Six other White House tapes will be examined for tampering as Sirica plans to finish work shortly after year’s start.
