The veteran outfielder Silvera, long a popular Yankee despite sporadic play, was sold to the Chicago Cubs. He expressed disbelief at first, then pride in proving the move right, recalling close ties with teammates and vowing to excel with his new club.
San Francisco’s Dons and Santa Clara Broncos head to Chicago for a two day Classic Basketball Tournament with Olympic connections possible. The Dons defend a 59 game win streak in the opener while Santa Clara faces Olympic champions in the nightcap and the field includes notable teams and players.
In a strong showing the W A P team defeated the winless McEntire five 59 to 40. McEntires started fast but trailed 32 16 by halftime, while Bertains beat the Druids 45 23 and Laytonville edged Plywood as the season opens.
Former national champion Art Larsen Jr and other tennis greats plan exhibition matches at the Seventh Regiment Armory on January 4 to raise funds for Art Larsen Sr and hospital expenses. Proceeds will support Larsen who suffered a brain artery rupture and partial paralysis from a highway accident. Northern California Tennis Association proposes a fan letter drive to garner $25,000 in support.

In Sacramento Senator Karl Desmond says he will introduce a bill in the 1957 Legislature to ban shooting of female deer and fawns by hunters. He also aims to strip the Fish and Game Commission of powers to set hunting regulations, noting objections from sportsmen and landowners. He has drafted a bill to delete from the fish and game code the section permitting taking female deer.
Paul Hor nung's acceptance of the Heisman Trophy was saluted by Rev. Theodore Hesburgh the Notre Dame president at a dinner noting there will be no de emphasis of football at South Bend. Hesburgh said anyone who would de emphasize football should have his head examined and that a sport cannot be de emphasized while still highly valued.

Costa claimed the eyes of Texas must be near sighted, noting he won the other two bouts in Houston by wider margins but did not receive the verdicts.
