Kissinger urges united NATO front on energy crisis

In Brussels Kissinger appealed to NATO foreign ministers for a united Western approach to the energy crisis and transatlantic talks. He urged more systematic consultations within NATO, stressed NATO as the cornerstone of U.S. policy, and defended U.S. support for Europe’s push toward unity while acknowledging allied complaints about consultation. France urged independent European defense. other leaders called for improved NATO consultation machinery amid Middle East tensions.

Mendocino coast districts eyed for new community college

Mendocino County's Committee on School District Organization plans a series of public meetings to consider folding the Mendocino and Fort Bragg coastal school districts into a community college district before the 1975 deadline. Coastal areas could join Mendocino, Santa Rosa, or College of Redwoods in whole or part. A second Monday meeting moves to Preston Community Hall. Discussion includes sex education policy and religious moral instruction in county schools. Public hearings are set for February with a March committee recommendation.

Keene to address Mendocino County Farm Bureau

Assemblyman Barry Keene will speak to Mendocino County Farm Bureau directors at 10 AM after a 9 30 start. The meeting chaired by Bill Pauli of Potter Valley is open to the public and will cover timber taxes land use and the energy crisis as they affect growers.

Nixon works to brief Congress on presidential records release

President Nixon has released his personal income taxes for the past five years and is seeking to furnish other presidential documents to Congress before the year ends. White House officials say briefings will cover milk industry donations to Nixon's 1972 re election bid, the ITT antitrust settlement, and the White House plumbers. A congressional staff meeting is planned for Wednesday to prep for future tax return discussions.

Santa calls to Ukiah kids weekday evenings this season

The Lake Mendocino Lions Club reports a Santa Claus telephone line at 462-1451 available weekdays 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. through Friday, Dec. 21 to reach Ukiah area children, aiming for at least 1,000 calls. Also includes a weekend emergency call log with local fire, rescue, and medical incidents.

Rejected Mendocino motel plan challenged by Reeds

The California Coastal Zone Conservation Commission denied Monte and Barbara Reed a use permit for a motel restaurant and bar in Mendocino City. The Reeds appeal via a show cause hearing set for December 14 in Mendocino County Superior Court. The Reeds had earlier received a permit from Mendocino County Planning for the Coach Inn, 45 motel units plus a restaurant and bar. The Regional Commission approved the permit 8 to 4 but the State Commission denied it 10 to 2. Lawyer Scott LeStrange will argue the state decision was arbitrary and abusive of process.

Trucks Block North State Highway In California Protest

In Tracy California a truckers protest tied up Interstate 580 with about 400 trucks blocking the two westbound lanes for roughly an hour. The disruption followed deliberate slowdowns cited by CHP and involved owner operators amid diesel fuel shortages. IRS checks found fuel price gouging at 225 of 850 stations nationwide with 145 rolling back prices.

Lake County crash claims life near Middletown

A loaded cattle truck rolled on Jerusalem Road east of Spruce Grove Road near Middletown at 3 p.m. Sunday, killing one Mexican laborer and injuring another. Chester Merrill Howard, 57, of Ukiah, sustained minor injuries. both he and the laborer, Rigoberto Arredondo, 16, were treated at Redbud Community Hospital. The deceased was a relative of Arredondo. the truck carried 18 head of cattle with one killed.

Willits Veterinarian Acquitted of Three Morals Charges

A Superior Court jury acquitted Dr. David Ward on three felony charges alleging misconduct with two teenage boys after a trial that included a prior hung jury and a later confession dispute. Ward wept as the verdict was read, with defense highlighting deception surrounding a signed confession.
