Ukiah's indoor NET meet yields top five scores against Solano and Martinez. Standouts include Bob Wood 17 of 20, Ken Cummins 195, Bob Montgomery 193, and Irvin Brown 197 leading Ukiah to an unbeaten NEL mark. Others scoring high against Martinez include Alvin Rupe 189 and Herb Singel y 188.
Big Oaks defeated Steiner 67-65 as Laws Frederickson sealed the win with two free throws at the buzzer in Hopland. Tom Lawrence led Big Oaks with 14 points, Brad Shear had 12, while Steiner’s Ray Kennedy posted 18 and Steve Garrett 2. Next, Big Oaks faces Nylander’s Market and Anton’s Propane clashes with Steiner at Kelseyville gym.
Ukiah High girls’ sports teams had a busy week with a long awaited playday event. Potter Valley dominated the competitive games, earning top honors while Ukiah’s exhibition and color games energized the day.
Dave Strong announces 168 high school players signed up for the Boys Recreation League basketball program. He will meet Monday with Bill Murphy and Brick Bralich to draft a schedule. Eleven teams in the Junior-Senior division and ten in the Freshmen-Sophomore. Games set for Thursday in a six-game weekly format.
The Packers have clinched the Western Division title and plan a cautious approach for the playoff game. San Francisco, currently fourth in the division, must push for a higher finish and risk taking bold moves against Green Bay.
Wakefield Mass based American Mutual Liability ins says 15000 injuries on nations golf courses this year. Half of victims are players and 25 percent are caddies with others including course workers and motorists. Fatalities include dohittting and heat prostration with ball speeds up to 250 mph and clubs at 200 mph.
Entries for the final Masonite golf tournament must be submitted at the pro shop by Saturday. Pro Winston Slane announced a shotgun start for Sunday morning as golfers begin the two day event. The swatch has been twice postponed this year and the round will be shot a week from Sunday.
Undefeated Bakersfield College Renegades face Cameron Aggies of Oklahoma in Pasadena for the national two year college title. About 1000 fans expected as Bakersfield aims to extend its hot run on the Rose Bowl turf in the New Year Classic.
Eighteen bowlers advance to the Ukiah Valley Association for Retarded Children's Hidden Handi cap bowling house finals at Yokayo Bowl. Final qualifiers include Slim Riecke and Piet Radecliff among others with scores, averages, and handicaps listed, as prize money exceeds 3060. The house champion will compete in Santa Rosa at the Rose Bowl on December 17.
United Press International reports the Colts and Rams meet in a coast to coast telecast with NBC coverage while Giants face the Eagles in Philadelphia as part of weekend NFL action. Browns Packers and other matchups highlight Sunday’s schedule amid early season standings and injuries.
Southern California aims for its third win in as many intersectionals this season by hosting Kansas in Los Angeles. The Trojans rebound from a mixed road trip with victories over Missouri and Kentucky and a loss to Oklahoma.
