Mendocino College Rejects MSH Site in Favor of Redwood Valley

Mendocino Community College trustees on Wednesday voted 6-0 to continue with Redwood Valley as the permanent campus site, shelving Mendocino State Hospital. Al Canepa abstained, and a prior motion for a joint committee to explore Beckstoffer offers was defeated. Supt. DeVries outlined potential tax impacts from annexations and state funding of up to 7.9 million dollars for construction.

Mail service improvement promised

Nixon not required to testify in Watergate trial

U.S. District Judge John J. Sirica ruled Nixon will not testify in the Watergate cover-up trial. He named Nixon an unindicted coconspirator but denied a deposition delay until January 6. Sirica also excused Nixon from subpoenaed testimony, paving a verdict before Christmas.

Plane crash in Sri Lanka kills 191 pilgrims on Mecca flight

A Martin Air DC8 carrying 182 passengers and nine crew, mostly pilgrims bound for Mecca, crashed into a 1,000-foot rock wall near Colombo. Witnesses described a giant fireball as rescue teams battled rugged terrain. Investigators from the Netherlands traveled to Colombo to determine the cause.

Burns urges Congress to delay lifting U.S. gold ban

Federal Reserve Chair Arthur Burns urged delaying Dec. 31 removal of the 40 year old private gold ownership ban. He warned relaxations could hurt deposits, homebuilding, stock prices, and the dollar while supporting Treasury’s plan to sell 2 million ounces of gold to dampen demand. Burns favored staying out of the gold market after the sale. Treasury Secretary Simon announced the auction, prompting a world price drop.
