The Giants edge Milwaukee 3 2 as Jack Sanford wins his 13th and Jim Davenport hits his 13th. Spahn takes the loss for Milwaukee after a wild game featuring back to back homers by Mays and Cepeda and a late Giants rally.
Oakland Raiders visit Denver Broncos in an exhibition game at University of the Pacific Stadium Stockton. More than 10 000 expected as Raiders aim to rebound after 27 33 loss to San Diego and first home crowd in Oakland history last week.
A half dozen high school swimmers travel to Sacramento for the Capitol Invitational at Sierra Swim and Tea Club Auburn Boulevard. Entered athletes include Jeff and John Lawson Diane Ellis Nancy Musna John and Teri poo Dennis Moonier Finn McAllister. The meet draws top AAU and regional teams with finals held Saturday only due to school start.
The Sacramento Seataurs skin diving club hosts a four day discovery dive at Van Damme Beach State Park with events Sunday Labor Day weekend. Open to all divers ages under 18 require parental release. entry fee is $1. Prizes for largest weight of starfish and sea urchins and smallest urchin or starfish.
Coach Bob Gein, aided by John R. Emigh formerly of Montana and Idaho, plans to outfit Jayvee players after physicals and lead them to the practice field. Varsity candidates report at Ukiah High for their first workout as two-a-day sessions begin ahead of the Sept 28 opener at Novato.
Lorraine and Bill Foster won the Mr. and Mrs. trophy with a 140 net at Ukiah Municipal Golf Course. Gertrude Northrop and Bud Northrop were second with a low net in the same event. Marge Boynton and Fred Christy won the Beans and Belles mixed twosome, defeating Marguerite Sechwarm and Ward Briggs with a 17 net. Ukiah juniors played Brooktrails as Twilight play nears its final week and an inter-league playoff is planned.
The San Francisco Forty Niners acquired veteran John Mellekas from the Chicago Bears in exchange for a high draft choice. Mellekas, a six year pro at tackle and center, joins a weakened line after injuries to Frank Morze and John Thomas shifting roles. Six more players must be cut before the Saturday game against Dallas in Sacramento.
Ukiah Riding Club concludes its gymkhana sponsorship for the season as members prepare for upcoming fairs. Mrs. Mundt recalls the Red wood Empire gymkhana's success, while Norman Buhn coordinated logistics. Local merchants funded trophies and ribbons enhancing entry appeal for 30 plus horses and riders.
Gassers top the American Twilight Golf League with 37 points after a 41 to 1 victory over Munnell and her team. Merk's Electrons lead the National League with 36 points following a whitewashing of Wegges Air Conditioning. Other Wednesday night results include Samoa Club over Albertson Insurance 84 to ?, Big Oaks over Buxton Insurance 75, Masonite and Polar Cubs 66, Daily Journal over Pioneer Company 81. Low gross was Don Rones with 36, tied for second at 39 racers John Hinas Jr and Don Rones Jr. Low net led by Don Rones at 31, with Rod Zimmerman second at 33. A group including Don Bones Jr Alan Auger John Hines Jr and Ben Caber shared third net. Colbert’s performance came despite a sore hand.
