High speed chase ends in head-on collision in Ukiah

A 16-year-old Ukiah boy led deputies on a chase along N State Street and the Highway 101 on ramp, crashing head-on into a car driven by 40-year-old John Lampie. Lampie hospitalized with concussion and possible internal injuries. Bates charged with felony drunk driving and failure to drive on the right. Bates and his 14-year-old brother sustained minor injuries and scalp lacerations respectively.

Truck crash victim's heart transplanted alive for another patient

A Humboldt County crash victim declared cerebrally dead had his heart removed at Stanford Medical Center for a transplant. Donor Kathleen Clemons, injured but not seriously, permitted the procedure. The crash killed Sara Burton, three months old, and Paul R. Burton, 24, in Willits area. District Attorney Duncan James planned vehicular manslaughter counts against driver Calvert.
