The Ukiah varsity and junior varsity teams prepare for two nights of games at Chessall Gym. A physical exam was held and 90 players were tested across grades, with seniors and sophomores noted. Coach Bill Tatum and his staff anticipate lineup decisions as drills begin.
Ukiah High plans early workouts next Monday as two daily sessions run 9 30 to 11 00 a m and 3 30 to 5 00 p m freshmen report after school start, juniors seniors report tonight at 7 30 p m at Chessall Gym. Turnout aims to keep around 90 players in one group split into positions with Varsity Jayvee coaches Rituman Bee Deering and Jayvee coach Gelt Boll Lange guiding. Football year notes include late issuance of equipment after physicals and local schedule with Healdsburg Terra Linda Willits Hogan Vallejo and other Bay Area rivals. Varsity games begin at 2 p m with junior games earlier and Friday night road games in classic gridiron pattern.
Johnny Stephenson unleashes a three run double off Bob Miller as the Mets rally from 3-1 deficit at Dodger Stadium. In Arcata on Saturday the big Eureka Rotary Club sponsored Redwood Empire All-Star Classic brings South All-Stars from Ukiah Potter Valley Coyoto Willits Fort Bragg Anal y Saint Helena Calistoga Petaluma Santa Rosa Cloverdale and Lower Lake against North All-Stars from ten schools. Forty eight players practice two a days at Arcata and prepare for the one-week clash at Redwood Bowl with hopes of staying healthy.
Local football fans will trek north to Arcata to watch the North take on the South in a talent laden game. Tickets are on sale at the stadium with proceeds going to Rotary International Youth Exchange Scholarship fund. Ed Cox, long a director of the Redwood Empire Football Classic, has a special interest as his son plays center for the North.
The incident between San Francisco Giants pitcher Juan Marichal and Dodgers catcher John Roseboro sparked intense press scrutiny. Marichal swung a bat at Roseboro amid a dugout confrontation, drawing calls for discipline. A new Mendocino Dive Shop opens at the Little Store on Highway 1 near Van Damme State Park. It offers compressed air, skin and scuba gear, unique wetsuits, local diving maps, and hopes to launch diving boat trips from a nearby ramp. Managed by Haroll Wilkins and opened by Ed Braly of the San Francisco Skin Dive School, the shop serves divers from Point Arena to Fort Bragg.
