Riot at Cyprus Embassy Leaves U S Ambassador Dead

U S Ambassador Rodger P Davies was killed as rioters of about 700 Greek Cypriots stormed the American embassy in Nicosia amid protests against the Turkish invasion. Eyewitnesses and reports described gunmen in military garb firing inside the compound as Greek Cypriots burn flags and cars. A U S Marine guard reportedly died, with conflicting accounts of the cause of Davies' death. Greek and Turkish leaders condemned the violence and called for policy adjustments as fighting intensified around Nicosia.

Ford endorses conditional amnesty for Vietnam deserters

President Ford at the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention proposed studying deserter cases individually and potential pathways back into society while rejecting blanket amnesty. He urged officials to report by Sept. 1 on about 50,000 deserters and promised to open the VA to veterans, with Roudebush named to lead. Reagan to Visit Round Valley Thursday in Campaign Stop

Gov Ronald Reagan plans a visit to Round Valley on Thursday landing at Covelo airport at 9 30 a m. He will meet leaders Joe Russ and Richard Wilson and tour the French Intensive Garden Project before a light lunch at Wilson’s home. He then flies to Modoc County Fair in Cedarville for opening ceremonies.

Fires Reported Across Multiple Sites With No Major Damage

Fire logs show Sunday evening grass fires on North State Street and Masonite Road with no damage, plus a garage blaze at 251 Washoe Drive causing minor damage. Early Monday hours note another grass fire on Orr Springs Road with no damage, indicating several small incidents reported by local responders.

Cable TV rate hike hearing set for tomorrow

A public hearing on TelePrompTer Cable TV rate increases is scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday at the courthouse before county supervisors. Derailment Blocks NWP Tracks Near Ukiah

A derailment 11 miles north of Ukiah blocked the Northwestern Pacific Railroad line for about 12 hours. Five front cars of a 90 car freight bound for Eureka derailed on a curve at 12:45 p.m. Damage was minor and service resumed by 1 a.m. Crews from Willits and Ukiah repositioned the cars with cables after two tractors arrived. The cause was under investigation. the train moved north at 15 mph prior to the derailment.

Miners Observe Five Day Memorial Work Stoppage

Eighty thousand soft coal miners remained off the job for a five day memorial stoppage that the coal industry called a Ploy to strengthen the United Mine Workers bargaining position in forthcoming coal negotiations.

Alphabet bomber cited for Saturday blast in LA

A man calling himself Isaac Rasim claimed the Saturday explosion that leveled an industrial block in Los Angeles used benzoyl peroxide, but police and fire officials discounted any link to the airport bombing. The blast caused about 5 million dollars in damage. Rasim urged immigration law repeal and warned of more action. He said his group would keep the city “clean” of fireworks as authorities evacuated several terminals after bomb threats.

Coast motel appeal ruling in Mendocino this week

Superior Judge Tim OBrien heard Friday arguments on Barbara and Monte Reids appeal against the California Coastal Commission denial of a 45 unit two story motel in Mendocino. He will rule this week after considering substantial evidence and due process claims.
