In a precedent setting decision the California Coastline Commission denied Sea Ranch's appeal for coastal exemption. The ruling may affect large shoreline projects along California's 1072 miles and relates to a use permit for exploratory drilling by Sun Oil. Pat Collins outlined environmental and construction concerns including roads, sump, pollution risks, air quality, wildlife impact, and hydrogen sulfide emissions and noted air pollution will be addressed later. A Superior Court jury deliberated three and a half hours before finding Eric Kent Fulmor, 60, of Covelo, guilty of second degree murder in the shooting death of John Henry Arbill, 22, of Covelo, near the Fulmor residence with a 12 gauge shotgun. Judge Tim O'Brien set August 30 at 9:30 a.m. for sentencing.

Nixon tapes held in temporary custody by House
President Ford ordered all Nixon tapes and documents held in custody by the House for review by the special Watergate prosecutors office. Highway patrolman and wife escape burning crash near Willits
An off duty highway patrolman David L Brown 34 and his wife Marian 31 escaped death when their car collided head on with another vehicle on Highway 20 six miles west of Willits. Both Brown and Marian suffered minor injuries and were rushed to Howard Memorial Hospital. The other driver Raymond M Lorenzo 33 of Chico and a passenger Robert T Hardin 21 endured minor injuries and were treated at the same hospital. Lorenzo said blinding sun from Two Rock summit caused him to misjudge and strike the Brown car, the crash sending it toward a steep embankment and flames.

Greek premier rules out war with Turkey cease-fire in Cyprus
