Ukiah 12th District Fair Horse Shows and Racing

Ukiah hosts a four day fair opening Thursday with harness and running races on Friday and Saturday afternoons starting at 2 p m and evening horse shows at 7 p m. Ukiah Riding and Driving Club oversees events with local drivers and entries from across the state. Pat Linfoot judges the horse show and Bing Bingham serves as announcer as trophies are awarded amid a parade of club units and junior groups.

Jesus Bedoy a fruit worker from Upper Lake lies near death after a morning stabbing in Scotts Valley following a bar dispute with Tony Gonzales. Gonzales, 5 feet 4 inches with dark curly hair and a facial scar, is sought on an all-points bulletin. Bedoy was found at 2 a.m. by two local girls.

Fleeing speedsters crash before sheriff trap near Willits

Three Willits men were hospitalized Friday night with critical injuries after a car crashed into a bridge abutment on the Willits Covelo road while fleeing a pursuing deputy. James Jordan 22 Eddie Wilburn 27 and Jack Wilburn 31 suffered skull fracture broken pelvis and other injuries. The men fled a Country Club Bar fight and drove toward Covelo where Deputy Easton Terry waited at the Covelo entry. The fleeing car smashed into a bridge abutment and the three were unconscious en route to Howard Memorial Hospital Willits. An unrelated note: Hansen Pacific Corp announces a $50 000 chipping plant project at Fortuna with Masonite Corp.

Trucks Collide On Low Gap Road Injures Driver Cited

Two trucks collided on Low Gap Road five miles west of the Redwood highway. One person, Lois Jackson, 26, Ukiah, suffered minor injuries and was advised to see her doctor. Drivers Robert C. Jackson, 28, and Carl L. Moore, 21, Ukiah, were cited for driving without adequate glasses and improper passing. Officer John E. Mason investigated.

Britain Opens Trade With Red Countries

London reports Britain eased controls on trade with Russia and Communist European satellite governments. Orders totaling 120 million dollars and 28 million dollars worth of steel rolling plants are under consideration, with some items still restricted. The move, agreed with the United States and NATO powers, reduces embargoed goods from about 400 to 250 items while keeping strategic items banned. The Russians and Chinese have shown large purchasing interest, with China urging broader trade during the Geneva conference.

Soil Auger Tests Drain Feasibility in Mendocino County

Soil Conservation men test drainage on William Johnson’s River road ranch using a gasoline powered soil auger borrowed from Santa Rosa.
