Jack Golden Named Lake County Superior Court Judge

Reagan appointed Jack Golden a Ukiah lawyer to Lake County Superior Court, succeeding Ralph Devoto who retired near age 70. Golden, 49, is married with four children and a Navy veteran, with long ties to Ukiah and active in statewide bars and legal groups.

Revenue sharing battle ends for Mendocino County 1974

County supervisors capped the 1974 revenue sharing at 230000 for outside groups but only 140000 was committed to preapproved programs. Winners include Ukiah Fort Bragg Willits senior centers Covelo Indian programs and several health and youth groups. Funding totaled 206310 for county needs plus 415000 for data processing with 100000 in new gear. A dissenting vote blocked using revenue sharing to cover 84000 due in 1974 75. Funds will be reevaluated with a new five member monitoring panel early next year.

Nixon Subpoenaed to Testify in Watergate Trial

Former President Nixon was subpoenaed to appear as a witness at the Watergate cover up trial for John Ehrlichman. The order sets a September 9 court appearance in Washington while Jaworski weighs further legal action. Nixon named as unindicted coconspirator. seven associates indicted including Ehrlichman and Haldeman.

Mendocino Humboldt clash over Eel River flood talks

Mendocino County indicated willingness to meet Humboldt County on Eel River flood problems but Supervisor Harvey Sawyers opposed any collaboration. Humboldt County chairman Ray Peart sought a day long planning session, while the board approved a brief reply offering to discuss future Eel River work. The Wild Rivers bill, backed by Sen Behr, would pause dam or flood control projects for 12 years. Sawyers warned against aiding Humboldt, while Ernie Banker urged sticking to prior Eel River studies and plans. Campbell’s brief reply passed 4-1.

High Court ruling limits jail trials to attorney judges

California Supreme Court held unanimously that criminal trials punishable by jail must be presided over by attorney judges unless the defendant waives the right. The ruling, applying to trials after the decision, affects Mendocino County and other jurisdictions with non attorney justice court judges. Justice Louis H. Burke wrote the opinion noting potential unfairness in non lawyers handling jail cases.

Assassination Attempt Ends in Double Tragedy in Seoul

In Seoul a gunman killed the president’s wife and a teenaged girl during Park Chung-hee’s nationally televised speech at a crowded theater. Police wounded the would be assassin, who was captured as security forces detained him. The tragedy occurred during a ceremony marking Korea's liberation from Japan in World War II.
