Cardinals Rally Behind Dick Hughes In Victory Over Giants

St Louis gained a 2 1 win as Dick Hughes, a 29 year old rookie, pitched nine scoreless innings of relief and earned the decision. Ray Sadecki absorbed the loss for San Francisco while Lou Brock provided the key run with a bases empty single. The Cardinals widened their lead in the National League pennant race as Houston, Atlanta, and Cincinnati also won.

Eight world records were broken or tied at the Amateur Union swim titles held at West Suburban Oaks Park. Greg Buckingham led with a world mark in the 200 meter freestyle while Mike Burton shattered his own 1500 meter time. Don Schollander set a meet record in the 100 yard freestyle and 200 meter freestyle. Bill Deschamps and Drake Lyndall each won titles in Ukiah and Lakeport. Spitz led in points with 24 as Schollander claimed two individual wins and third place went to Doug Russell. Keith Russell topped the 3 meter diving, with Bernie Wrightson and Jim Henry close behind.
