Fair attendance soars as 37,000 flock to four day event
The Redwood Empire Fair junior livestock sales show more animals but lower average prices. A total of 121 beef, lambs and hogs sold, 29 more than last year, with 41,004.46 in 4-H and FFA checks. Grand champion steer Alex Wilson Covelo 4-H sold for 1.30 a pound to Vince Sisco Palace Hotel Ukiah. 1,020 pounds. Lamb and hog champions set records, with FFA and 4-H winners from Ukiah, Potter Valley, Willits and Covelo. Attendance over 37,000 marked a record.

Effluent danger averted at Calpella pond spill risk
Dave Long of Mendocino County environmental health helped avert a potential Russian River pollution incident near Calpella. The elder pond, built in 1958, could have overflowed sending effluent into the river unless a temporary holding pool and quick cleanup using Clean-up and Abatement funds were approved. Engineering plans include a temporary capture pool and eventual plant expansion within one to two years.

Boonville Man Held in Wife's Death Murder Charge
A 63 year old retired carpenter, Jack Clifton Pinckney, is held on murder charges after deputies found his wife Dorene Helene Pinckney fatally shot six times at their Boonville home. The shooting, a firearm homicide, is Mendocino County's seventh this year. Pinckney was arraigned in Uxiah Justice Court. Eversole Mortuary handling funeral arrangements.
