Ukiah hosts five-team Colt League World Series opener

Local baseball fans learn the schedule as Ukiah opens Wednesday against Central Regional Champion Santa Clara in Shawnee Oklahoma World Series action. Niners Trim Roster at Camp with Nine Players Cut

Robin Roberts, once the Phillie ace in the whiz kid era, pitched four hits in a shutout as the Houston Astros defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0 in a dome game. Roberts voiced renewed starting promise after joining Houston as a free agent, while Tony Gonzalez collected three Phillies hits. Lou Burdette took the loss for Philadelphia.

Jesus Pimentel Fights Benitez For Bantam Bout Title

San Jose Calif UPI Jesus Pimentel a 2 1 favorite to beat Alex Benitez in a 10 round bantamweight bout. Pimentel praised as a top bantam title contender but suspended by the WBA for not fighting 118 pound titlist Fighting Harada. Benitez ranked seventh, has won 22 of 23. Pimentel has seven straight wins, 48 of 49. Manager Harry Kabakoff says he will discuss Pimentel case at the WBA convention.
